Pope vs Hitler is a thrilling docudrama that explores one of the least known stories of World War II – the role of the Vatican in the conspiracy to assassinate Adolf Hitler. But as Hitler pondered a direct attack on the Pope, one of his bravest warriors was beginning to plot an attack on him. Catholic Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg had been gravely wounded in Tunisia. As he recovered he vowed to dedicate his life to the cause of ending Hitler’s. The catholic church supported the Nazis in the Balkans and after the war they gave germans fake Italian identities to get to catholic nations in south America. That’s how Bormann, Mengele, etc escaped.

The Catholic Church, as an institution, in its official policy and capacity supported the men you refer to, OR individual influential Catholic politicians and/or church men sympathetic to them provided the means and ability to flee to S. America?

There is a huge difference and your generic statement borders on libel. Please clarify and provide hard evidence, not opinion or heresay.

It’s very problematic to broadly assert something like “the Catholic Church supported xyz” without specific evidence and details.
Many nazis disguised themselves as refugees using false documents. That hardly qualifies as deliberate support by the Catholic Church to help Josef Mengele escape. :eek:
 
It would be like saying the U.S. military helped Mengele by releasing him from captivity.
…which they did.
 
Well hindsight is always 20/20.

Im sure 100, 200, 500 yrs into the future, people then will be looking back to our times and asking why the church didnt do more to stop such and such, or why they seemed to go along with such and such, etc etc.

Personally, I think the more ‘the church’ and ‘the secular authority’ are at each others throats, the better it is for the church, have to remember God said christians would be hated and persecuted, in order for that to happen, the church and its laypeople must be doing and saying things that the secular authority does not like/ does not agree with,/does not condone.

The scariest scenario I can think of is a church who is a bit too ‘buddy-buddy’ with the secular authority (govts). Especially true for the type of world we are living in today!

The basic premise is false. Having studied the period extensively. 1) There was no secret war. Pope Pius XII maintained communications with the National Socialist government. He spoke fluent German. He also received reports from priests and others living in Germany and the Greater Reich. He was concerned about all reports of the ill treatment of all people. He worked to secure the rights of Catholics living in Germany.
  1. The secret about anything else going on was complicated but not that complicated. A) Allied Intelligence did hide, and keep from justice, certain members of the German Armed Forces, and high ranking members of the Nazi Party. They had technical or other intelligence that made them valuable. Justice was denied because the Bolsheviks, or Soviet Union, was our new enemy even before the last shots of World War II were fired. All of these people were needed, in some capacity, to help arm the Allies and provide information about the Soviet Union. Crimes against the value of increased security and preparedness about the very real threat of the Russian Army driving into Western Europe? Deals done, sometimes involuntarily.
  2. The broad picture includes: fake identities and travel papers issued to whoever under various circumstances. In a report dating from World War II, which I own, the American Counter-Intelligence Corps had a SECRET Weekly Intelligence Summary published. My copy is dated 10 JUL 1945. On page one: “2. Fifteenth Army Group reports that on or about 1 May 1945 Gauleiter ] of SALZBURG (Z9727) ordered the SALZBURG Police Department to issue a number of blank passports. These passports may be used to facilitate escape of enemy agents or high ranking German officials.” (My copy was later downgraded and is no longer secret.)
The distribution of these intelligence summaries included a wide range of military commands and other military branches, including the OSS. But who knows about the activities of the OSS, the far less known CIC or the practically unknown T-Force, which worked with the CIC?

Not every German in the Wehrmacht was a member of the Party, or even German.

And the Pope spoke out against the Nazi regime whenever he felt it necessary.

Church officials were dealing with a flood of refugees, not just Nazis, that wanted to get out of Europe. Anybody could claim to be anybody, and have the necessary documents to “prove” it.

I will end here but there is a lot more. A lot more.
