What Pope do you think made the most difference since 1800?? I think Leo XIII was an excellent Pope and I like his writings and am reading well into about his life and his Papacy

Pick a pio!
But seriously, the Piuses (ix-xii) had a HUGE impact on the social teachings especially.

I would pick the Piuses. However, Benedict XVI is also a personal second choice.

Pope Pius the tenth…regarding permission for frequent rather than infrequent Communion, and the Communion age for children. Thanks so much for the blessing of daily Communion St Pius!

Hi tobinatorstark, do you have any links to your favourite writings of Pope Leo XIII ? thanks.

What about the writings do you particularly like ?

I like Providentissismus Deus the best. You can find his encyclicals on the Vatican’s website.

Pious 12, for stewarding The Church through the Nazi nightmare and WWII in Europe; John 23, for Vatican II; *John Paul II *for his intellectual contributions and underground war against Communism. 👍

For me, this would be difficult to say which one is the best. The Church has been extremely blessed with excellent popes during this period of time attesting to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.

Pope Pius IX and Pius X

Pope Pius IX because of Vatican I and his many encyclicals.

His Syllabus of Errors remains today the test for orthodoxy and the traditional Catholic faith.

Pope Pius X for his many reforms and his famous Pascendi Domici Gregis encyclical.

Pope Pius X suppressed the Modernists and warned about the synthesis of all heresies. He drove them underground for awhile and his teachings have given traditional Catholics the recourse they need against the Modernist heresy in modern times.

Pope Paul VI made the most difference in my oppinion for all the changes after Vatican 2.
Also Pope Pius XI, it’s because of him that Vatican City’s independant.

I agree with all of your choices, but would have to go with Deacon’s response in that the list of Popes since the 1800’s have all been extraordinarily holy men. In light of the Industrial Revolution, Modernism, Communism, Naziism, etc., we have been surely blessed by Popes who stand firm as the Vicars of Christ. What other voice, but the voice of the Catholic Popes, has spoken clearly and repeatedly against any sinful intrusions into the world?
Society at large has become more immoral every year. What was scandal just a few years ago is now fashionable and even encouraged. Formerly staunch Catholic countries like France, Spain, and Ireland, now allow divorce, abortion, gay marriages, pornography, and almost as many vices as Las Vegas or the Netherlands. The Church is mocked for a myriad of reasons you are all aware of, but it does not change. Why? Because it “speaks as God would”, and does not have the audacity to speak “for” God. Truly the Holy Spirit’s actions are visible in our Holy Father(s). We are so fortunate to be Catholics, my friends…never forget that!

Amen to that! How do you pick just one? We have been blessed to be sure. I’m not sure how one could quantify influence with such a stellar group to choose from.

The question (Which pope since 1800 made the most difference?) is also difficult to answer without some historical persepctive. It’s much easier to see the influence over time of the earlier popes in this time period than the later ones. It’s easier to see the influence of Pius IX than Benedict XVI. It’s hard to say for sure what difference Benedict XVI has made when he’s only been pope for 3 1/2 years and we haven’t seen any long-term effects of his decisions or documents (even though I’m confident the effects will be good! :))

I am surprised no one has mentioned John XXIII or John Paul II. Remember, the question is “Who made the biggest difference?”, not, “Who’s your favorite?” 😉

John XXIII called for Vatican II which has certainly had a profound impact on the Church (and probably will continue to do so for centuries to come).

John Paul II was pope for 26 1/2 years, during which time he revised Canon Law, oversaw the development of a new universal Catechism, visited more countries, met more people, and travelled more miles than any previous Pope. He started World Youth Day, wrote dozens of encyclicals and apostolic letters, articulated the Theology of the Body, and much, much more. I’d say we’ll be feeling the effects of his work for many, many years as well!

Of course, we can come up with lists like this for most of the popes in the last 200 years (except for maybe John Paul I ;)). We are truly blessed. I’m glad I don’t have to live through the times of the anti-popes or other sinful popes! 🙂

In addition to my “best pope” post, I’d like to add that the most maligned Pope is Pius XII, a truly holy man, gifted theologian, Pontiff during World War II, honored in his own time…now the subject of such baseless denouncements for his supposed “indifference” to the plight of the Jews during the war. What revisionist rubbish, makes me angry.

I am surprised that Pope Pius XII isn’t a saint already. I want explore his works as well as, Pope Saint Pius X, Pope Saint Pius V. I want to explore them before I get into exploring John Paul II and Benedict XVI. Thanks for all your (name removed by moderator)ut.
