**Where their any popes in Rome before Constantine came and conquered it and made it Christian?

If so, What did the Church do during Pagan Rome?

If so, How did the Church act during Pagan Rome?

Was Constantine a Church recognized pope?

Where was St. Linus and the rest of them after Peter?**

Thanks!

**YES

MET IN SECRET TO CELEBRATE THE EUCHARIST, INCLUDING IN THE CATACOMBS.

AS A PERSECUTED RELIGION. THE FIRST SEVERAL POPES WERE MARTYRED.

Was Constantine a Church recognized pope?

NO.

Where was St. Linus and the rest of them after Peter?

BASED OUT OF ROME.**

You can get all the info on the popes at www.newadvent.org

Here’s a link to get a list of all the popes:
newadvent.org/cathen/12272b.htm

Then, at the top of that page, you’ll see where you can do a search. Just type in the name of the pope you want info on (eg. Linus) and links to the encyclopedia will come up.

Here’s a Catholic Answers tract on Peter being in Rome: catholic.com/tracts/was-peter-in-rome

Thanks for the questions! I suggest that you read some of the Early Church Fathers who talk about the Bishop of Rome, the Petrine Chair, etc. This should help give you a better understanding of how the early Church understood the Bishop of Rome’s position. God bless, and I pray that your journey into the Church goes well!

Wikipedia says Constantine entered Rome (ending a civil war) in 312. By that time there had been 32 popes, the 32nd and current one being Miltiades.

The following year, Constantine legalized Christianity in the Empire. He did not “make Rome Christian,” by the way, just made it possible that Christians could live without fear of future persecutions.

The first thirty of Peter’s successors were dead by then. They had all lived in Rome, though, unless they were exiled or fled temporarily. The Pope is the bishop of Rome.
