WE only Have 1 Pope

No “sort of” about it - we have ONE and only one Pope even though we have a living former Pope. Which is - incidentally - not the first time this has happened in Church history.

Slow down guys…you are getting way to serious here. Maybe I should put a smiley or something there; but I sort of thought most of you would see that as a joke.

Happy cake day.!

Sorry I didn’t, thought you were serious.

Likewise. As the thread title makes clear, there are people who are are genuinely confused about the issue, so it’s not the greatest idea, even as a joke, to say anything that might keep em confused.

Edited to say, Somebody please cite the Council that approved Jerome’s canon. No history book at hand.
I believe it was Hippo in 393
And Guttenberg’s press was 15th century, Henry VIII made good/bad use of it depending on your POV

Hello! I have a few friends who always ask me why is there more than 1 pope, when Jesus only told peter you are the rock. Not other people after you are also the rock. How can i prove that there can be more popes after one another.

Thanks
Blake
Greetings Blake
They are correct when they say Jesus told “no other people after you are also the rock” Jesus also did not tell his Apostles what to do about uncircumcised gentiles - Acts 15 but it did not keep them from lestening to the Holy Spirit to make the right descision. Jesus also did not tell his Apostles to replace Judas after Judas hanged himself but somehow Matthias enters the scene as an Apostle without Jesus’ direct help Acts 1:12.

We must remember the spirit is ALWAYS alive, and sense Jesus taught so much more than what he said while he was with us - Jn 21:25, and that He said He would not leave us orphans - Jn 14:18, and sense the gates of hell will never prevail over Gods church - Mt 16:17-19, why would anyone think Jesus would have a need for a pope in the 1st century but not in future centuries?

Peace!!!

Probable the remaining apostles and other Bishops who were made so by the apostles.

Here’s the answer from the bible:
  1. Read Matthew 10:1-8 {focus on verses 5-8}
  2. Then Read mat 28:19-20 and compare the two
Logically:

If Jesus intended for the Only Church and Only Faith He desired and established to be spread "throughout the WORLD; then there in an absolute sense HAD to be; HAS to be Papal succession.

God Bless you,
Patrick

Also, in Acts, the Apostles elect a successor to Judas. There would be no reason they wouldn’t elect a successor to Peter following his martyrdom in Rome.
