Urban legend. Hitler’s father was illegitimate, born Alois Schickelgruber. He later took his stepfather’s name, Hiedler, which had numerous spellings, but was prob. spelled “Hitler” by a clerk, according to the inerrant and infallible Wikipedia.

Hitler was himself legitimate.
Wow, creepy.

I’ve never heard this, and I’ve heard several theologians speak about this – can you provide a link for this?

What about Simon becoming Peter?
From the Catholic Encyclopedia:

As he [Paul] belonged to the tribe of Benjamin he was given at the time of his circumcision the name of Saul, which must have been common in that tribe in memory of the first king of the Jews (Philippians 3:5). As a Roman citizen he also bore the Latin name of Paul. It was quite usual for the Jews of that time to have two names, one Hebrew, the other Latin or Greek, between which there was often a certain assonance and which were joined together exactly in the manner made use of bySt. Luke ( Acts 13:9: Saulos ho kai Paulos). See on this point Deissmann, “Bible Studies” (Edinburgh, 1903, 313-17.) It was natural that in inaugurating his apostolate among the Gentiles Paul should have adopted his Roman name, especially as the name Saul had a ludicrous meaning in Greek.

Ok I looked in my “Catholicism Answer Book”:
f I were ever to beccome pope, I would take the name Peter II just to get a good laugh! 😛
I do not believe that any pope has ever taken the name Peter.
I think this is out of respect for the first Pope and because Jesus Christ gave him the name Peter.

That, and supposedly the pope who takes the name of Peter will either usher in the Second Coming or be the anti-Christ, depending on who you ask.

I remember reading somewhere…I think in Nostradamus’ prophecies (air quotes around that  ) that Peter will be the name of the last Pope…AAAAHHHHHHHHHH!!!   😃

I’d have to say I’d go with Athanasius or John Paul (and I would hope God would give me the amazing amount of humility to even attempt to follow either of these men’s footsteps!!)

I think its to confuse the Protestants.

I have never understood it. The early popes didn’t change their names, so why should they do it today?

'cause there’s only one ROCK that Christ built His Church upon.
I’m sure, every new elected Pope in his sound mind will never take the name Peter II nor the Magisterium will allow him to do so… 😃

I recently read that one of the early pope took a new name because the name he received at birth was Mercurius, derived from the name of the Roman deity Mercury. This possibilty, along with biblical precedent, could be factors. I hope that this helps.
This is correct. The first pope to change his name was Pope John II (533-535). His birth name was Mercurius, after one of the Roman gods. He recognized that this would be a bit inappropriate for the Vicar of Christ on earth. For the next four or five hundred years, some popes did and some didn’t, but by the start of the second milennium and ever since, I think pretty much every pope has taken a new name.

Here’s the same question answered on EWTN’s website:
Here’s a few previous threads here at CAF answering the same question:
It’s not unchangeable Tradition (capital T), but it is a fairly well-established tradition (small t) with a biblical basis (Abram to Abraham, Jacob to Israel, Simon to Peter). A new name signifies a new role.

Oh, and it’s an unwritten rule that no other pope will take the name Peter. At this point, after 2000 years with no other pope named Peter, it would seem quite brazen for someone to pick that name for himself. Awfully big shoes to fill!
