A quote is a quote. It is very fair to quote anything she said if she said it. Just because it does not fit some peoples agenda or ideas about what mother theresa was like does not mean that one cannot quote it. And in the original signature it was noted that the priest REPORTED this quote. I actually think the person who quoted this in thier signature is being more honest than anyone else about the quote.
It doesn’t bother you that the people who spent most of their adult lives with her doubt the authenticity of the quote? I mean, of the many hundreds of things that you actually do know that she said, why would you want to quote something that is not so likely to be her words? That seems a little like looking with an eye for something that fits some agenda rather than something that reflects Mother Theresa herself, doesn’t it? Likewise with the Holy Father. He writes and says so much, why is there some need to read messages between the lines of his more obscure actions? Is what he says and publishes widely not more than enough?

But whatever…I’m raising a question with you, not admonishing you outright. We’ve exchanged opinions. I think it is not quite honest. You disagree. Your thoughts are for you to think. As you say, as long as you note that the quote is reported, and not that is it authenticated, you have covered those bases. Likewise with those who report a hope that the Holy Father may be going in this direction or that. As long as they aren’t claiming a knowledge they don’t have, they can’t, IMHO, be admonished outright, but only the question raised.
honestly I don’t think that anyone has said that on this thread. Mother theresa wasnt alleged to have broken with teaching all she said is that it makes her sad. Well, It makes me sad too. And you can quote my future saintly self (hopefully)

This isn’t just about architechture. Why would you just think that it is? Is it bothersome to you?
There are things that are objectively good or ordained by legitimate authority for everyone, and there are those things which are subject in some degree to personal opinion. It does bother me when someone elevates their personal opinion to the level of the generally ordained, and especially when they try to make an important person an ally in that when the important person cannot be quoted with certainty to have said any such thing. Yes, that bothers me. That a bit different than, “It inspires me to think that this holy person seems to be edified by the same things that edify me.”

But again, you have my opinion and I have yours. I would venture to say that if and when either of us advances anywhere near to spiritual perfection in this life, we will undoubtedly be saddened and gladdened in different degrees and by somewhat different things than we are now. It is then, if ever, that people will start quoting us.

Let us at least hope that we will have come very near to holiness well and long before we get any reputation for having done so! 😃

😉 Love these paragraphs!

If we agree on that much, the rest doesn’t matter very much, does it? 🙂
(And the idea about hoping to become holy before getting a reputation for it was lifted from someone else; one of the Desert Fathers, I think…)
