Ok I didn’t know where to put this question…but I was just asked if there was any signifigance to the red shoes that Pope Benedict was wearing when he got of the plane in DC. Does anyone know?

I thought they were pretty cool. They made a neat contrast to the white and the black suit of Pres. Bush.

The Pope wears Prada (loafers), no kidding, and Gucci sunglasses too…He’s a bit of a fashion icon in some parts…Check on the internet search sites…very cool…

They are not Prada, they are made by his personal cobbler. Red papal shoes have a long history in the church.

This is cool.
i didn’t know that red papal shoes have a history…I have to go do a more indepth search about it.

He must wear red shoes because it says so in the Bible: “My beloved is white and red, chosen out of thousands”

As for the red shoes, Msgr. Ganswein wrote that the pope’s cassock and zucchetto are white, “but all the accessories are red,” including the shoes, because red is the color of martyrdom and the pope is the successor of the martyred St. Peter. Also, he said, “red is the color of burning love, the color of the fire of the Spirit.”
There’s actually a children’s book addressing this subject put out by the pope’s private secretary.

Here is something I just found…

Why Does the Pope Have Red Shoes?, a slim volume devoted to answering children’s questions, Monsignor Georg Ganswein, the Pope’s private secretary, explained the significance of the red accessories: Red is the colour of martyrdom and the pope is the successor of the martyred St. Peter, and also, he wrote, “red is the colour of burning love, the colour of the fire of the Spirit.”

NPR had a story on this on Friday. The HF has a cobbler who hand makes the shoes. They take close to a month to make. NPR said they cost around $600.

A good pair of shoes is often worth it! Though, I am unsure I would pay that much!

I agree…I just bought an 80.00 of running shoes and it about killed me. I hate to spend money on something that is just going to get worn out…

I am pertty frugal though 😃

Our local news also checked it out in the “fact or fiction” category. They definitely are not Prada and yes, are made by his cobbler. It’s interesting to hear about the history of wearing this color shoes.

I hardly think he’d be wearing them every other day, nor that he would buy a new pair each week or anything (especially if they take that long to make!).

If he gets in trouble so that the Swiss Guard can’t help, he just clicks the heels together and says, *“Nihil domestica sede iocundius.” *

According to Father Neuhouse and Raymond Arroyo…a pope before John Paul !! wore red shoes. Pope John Paul !! found brown shoes in England that he loved so he wore those. And, Pope Benedict wanted to wear the red shoes that had been worn by popes in the past.

They said that there is so much in our history of tradition that “who knows” ! LOL

Apparently, our Pope likes the red shoes and they are indicating that there isn’t much more to it than that! hahahaha

Gotta tell ya, in this last 6 days, I have fallen head over heals in spiritual love for this Vicar of Christ.

I have felt this way since John XXIII. I was 18 when Pius XII died and cannot really say that I knew enough about him at that time to form an opinion one way or another. What I have learned about Piux XII since then, tells me he is much maligned and was indeed a heroic historical pope to successfully guide the Church during that dark and tragic period. And now that we have a pontiff from that period of time, whom many many love and openly admit it, only reinforces God’s guidance of the Church through the Holy spirit.
