zuchetto, biretta, miter, I’m not sure which piece but I was told by a relative that visited Rome that if the headdress of the deceased pope was pinned to the ceiling and it fell he lost salvation. What in the world?! Has anyone heard of this before?

No.

No I have not. But that’s just nonsense. A Pope or anyone else can’t loose their salvation based on that.

It sounds like a twisted, misunderstood version of the old custom of raising the Galero of a deceased cardinal to the ceiling of the cathedral. I understand that this is no longer done as galeros are no longer given. You can see several old galeros (or could at one time) raised to the ceiling of St. Patrick’s in New York. To the best of my knowledge this was never done for a pope, the multi-tasseled Galero was not a papal symbol, and certainly the deterioration and fall of an old ceremonial hat has no significance whatsoever.

Superstitious nonsense and if any Catholic believes that they are committing a sin of grave matter.

Doesn’t “grave matter” seem a tad harsh for something as silly as a falling hat?

You missing the point by emphasising “falling hat”. What someone is being superstitious about is irrelevant.
Superstition is a sin of grave matter against the first Commandment.

Hmm…I think your relative might have confused a joke for something serious. In metropolitan cathedrals that have a cardinal archbishop, you will see some big red hats hung high above the bishop’s chair, or cathedra. These big red hats are called Galleros.

There’s an old saying/joke that when the gallero finally falls of its own weight to the floor, the soul of the cardinal finally gets out of purgatory. Your relative probably heard a variation of this. 👍

That is superstitious NONSENSE which you’re best off to ignore.

I don’t think anyone REALLY believes that a hat is an indicator of salvation or whatever. If one really did believe this, he is guilty of more than just being superstitious; he’s also guilty of being STUPID.

You might be surprised at the things people believe and yes I agree there must be some stupidity in there somewhere.

Just another way of Catholic bashing, Ignore it! But pray for those that claim such nonsense!! God Bless, Memaw

Well, I do know that some anti-Catholics will condemn the pope at the drop of a hat… 😃

First of all, this was never done with popes. However, the sees of deceased Cardinals used to hang their galeri from the ceiling of the church.

Firstly, the galero was left to rot and decay in the sight of the people. This was meant to show that all earthly honor decays — Even that of a cardinal. It is meant to be a subject of reflection.

Secondly, there is folklore (and nothing more) that when a cardinal’s galero fell, his soul finally ascended from purgatory and into heaven.

I think your friend had a grave misunderstanding of this second idea.
