I think that because he is the leader of a church that has over 1.2 billion people ( more than a lot of nations) that it is quite legitimate to ask him to talk before two political bodies.

Earlier this year the PM of Israel addressed a joint meeting of Congress. The transcript is here.
Neither PM Netanyahu’s speech nor Pope Francis’ address was explicitly religious in nature, but no one could be unaware of who they were and what they represent. During Netanyahu’s address we heard:
“We’re an ancient people. In our nearly 4,000 years of history, many have tried repeatedly to destroy the Jewish people. Tomorrow night, on the Jewish holiday of Purim, we’ll read the Book of Esther. We’ll read of a powerful Persian viceroy named Haman, who plotted to destroy the Jewish people some 2,500 years ago. But a courageous Jewish woman, Queen Esther, exposed the plot and gave for the Jewish people the right to defend themselves against their enemies.”
And Pope Francis spoke also of defending life:
“Yours is a work which makes me reflect in two ways on the figure of Moses. On the one hand, the patriarch and lawgiver of the people of Israel symbolizes the need of peoples to keep alive their sense of unity by means of just legislation. On the other, the figure of Moses leads us directly to God and thus to the transcendent dignity of the human being. Moses provides us with a good synthesis of your work: you are asked to protect, by means of the law, the image and likeness fashioned by God on every human face.”
I think it was eminently fair for Pope Francis to be invited, and I’m glad he took the opportunity to address our nation’s leaders.

You have me confused, but then they will probably come up with a new name one of these days so I’m not really gonna worry about it. God Bless, MemawI’m not sure I agree with you. You say mainlines were conservative on ‘religion and politics.’ Are you speaking politically within the denominations? Government? Theologically?
The 1950’s were the era of McCathy-ism and the cold war. I don’t believe the Mainlines were too conservative there, politically speaking.
I am not clear on what method you are using to move all sorts of people around the religious chess board.

Easy to speak Jesus harder to act like
I’ll take someone who acts with mercy and compassion, thereby being Christ’s agents because Jesus has no earthly hands , then any one who shouts “Hallelujah, Praise you Jesus”
Saying something is useless unless backed by love of The Lord and his people. Epistle of James and Matthew 25 good ways to see the importance of works and the uselessness of words not backed by works. If.all we do in evangelization is teach prayers and don’t get to be deliberate loving , merciful disciples, then we evangelize in vain. Love is what makes a true disciple. That it is why it is so disappointing to hear your ‘loving’ siblings in Christ take potshots at the pope and every thing catholic.
Why are Christians losing members? According to a poll taken , questioning
Youth , about why they don’t join churches the number one reason is hypocrisy? They talk love and peace but rake nails over each other every chance they get. What a perfect example we have given them. No wonder they don’t believe .
