Has anyone read “Sex and War, How biology explains Warfare and Terrorism” by Malcolm Potts, and if so what did you think about it? His views seem to be diametrically opposed to the doctrine of the Catholic Church, that birth control and abortion leads to a smaller population of young males in proportion to older males and females, which in turn leads to a reduction in violence, gang activity, terrorism, and war. The sex selection abortions performed in China has led to a shift in population to 130 males to 100 females, which will result in young males not being able to find a mate, which will result in more violence. The logic seems to be flawed, birth control and abortion stops violence, but in countries where sex selections abortions are common it will promote violence.

Birth control is unhealthy and kills hundreds of women each year. Abortion is the Barbaric act where those in power violently mutilate the most innocent, and vulnerable babies. It is violence at it essence. Supporting, encouraging, and promoting abortion IS supporting, encouraging, and promoting violence. 😦

I have long thought that the situation in China would play out as you suggest (Duh!) and have never quite been able to figure out what they were thinking!

Anyway, his theory does not seem to have worked out in practice so on that count I’s say he’s wrong. But also… I don’t think he’s right for another reason.

To get people to behave, we should use love rather than force. Thinking of what Bishop Fulton Sheen said, as long as we are operating in a framework of ideas, of pragmatism, utilitarianism, efficiency, etc, we will fail. We need (as a society) to operate out of *love. *How can we operate out of love if we see people only as economic units either creating or utilizing material goods? How can we love poeple if we see them in terms of cost/benefit ratios? If we right off the bat limit the number of people our children have around them to love?

Birth control and abortion, when socially acceptable, make human life cheaper.

Where human life is cheaper, there will ultimately be more violence.

In 1966, the USA was shocked by the Tower Shooting in Austin, Tex. No such mass murder had occurred in many years.

In 1973, the USA legalized abortion.

Now the country sees a comparable attack about every two years.

There is also far more gang killing than there was before.

Methinks at least in our country, the effect described has not occurred.

I’d also say that war is not related to the number of “young males”. War is initiated by older persons in positions of leadership, using young males as pawns.

The current thinking goes like this. Poverty is caused by a lack of jobs in certain parts of the country. Take Detroit. The majority of the population is on some form of public assistance. Single motherhood is common. Young men, usually without fathers, positive role models and no work to direct their energies, have the following ways to use their minds and time:
  1. Sell illegal drugs, which can involve violence and arrest, followed by incarceration, or death.
  2. Form gangs to steal cars, for example, which are then driven to chop shops to be repainted and resold or stripped for parts. The possibility of arrest and incarceration, or drive-by shootings by a rival gang, are high.
2 a) Who supplies these gangs with semi-automatic weapons like AK-47s or other weapons? And the drugs?
  1. Join the military.
  2. Find marginal jobs and spend your time getting high. The same with unwed mothers. In the latter case, the possibility of the mother losing custody of the child increases, and the child grows up in “the system.” Mental health problems and drug overdose are higher possibilities.
Last Summer, young toughs got into gunfights over minor incidents of disrespect or women, or some other reason. These were incidents of black on black violence, and, due to a lack of functioning EMS vehicles, survival rates dropped.

This Summer, a particular section of the East Side of Detroit is being targeted by local and Federal law enforcement due to the level of crime and violence.

There is the claim that abortion mills are being opened in more poor neighborhoods than those with jobs and higher incomes.

So, according to one source, the formula is: a child born to an unwed mother is more likely to get involved in violence and illegal activities and more likely to be incarcerated, making his dollar burden on society an issue, so it would be better if that person was aborted.

Peace,
Ed
