I was of course always a bit worried about my social life

But when you realize your addicted to the unchaste acts you also realize how it makes you a bit more paranoid about how people (especially girls think) and self conscious

This is just one reason why I hate failing so much in my battle but it’s also another reason to stop

Does anyone else experience this?

Please pray I can get back on track and start staying away from porn again

Praying for you, I’m in the same situation right now. You are stronger than your temptation and stronger than the demons that tempt you. God is by our side, brother/sister.

You are not alone. I myself have failed many times in my daily struggle to overcome this problem. Remember that you are not alone, God is with you.

YAAAS!

I struggled with the same addiction, thank God it’s years in my past now, but I still wish it never happened. Maybe it’s not as bad for you, but my social anxiety was pretty bad.

Porn definitely warps your mind, I’m not a psychologist or anything but I definitely believe it affects the way you view/relate to other people.

I think about all the time I spent isolated from people.

I think about how I wasted the most formative years of my life, when I should have been learning how to cultivate meaningful relationships.

It was only AFTER quitting that I began to realize this, and now I’m working pretty hard on being a normal functioning human.

Don’t give up. Pray, confess, take up running, or glass blowing, or anything to stay away from it. It gets easier over time, I promise!

Peace,

Stephen

I’ve overcome this struggle but am still tempted on occasion. I hope you find the strength or that God will provide you with the power to destroy this sin.

Pornography is the self-infliction of sexual abuse that affects a person on so many levels. I feel emotional distress just thinking back when I was addicted. It was far beyond me to control. I ended up on Paxil (an antidepressant) that has a strong side-effect in reducing the sex drive. A lot of people are afraid of taking this drug due to other negative side-effects, but I never experienced them. Without Paxil, I would have been under so much emotional distress that I could not function.

Opiates generally have that effect too…I personally know this to be true!

Strange that something many view as an addiction/ sinful, would reduce the need to commit other types of sin, isnt sin usually progressive?

It does not surprise me in the least that opiates or anti-depressants can or would affect porn use. Very many people, I think, turn to porn as a way of coping with or masking the other pains (both physical and emotional) and the frustrations of life. As to whether the use of porn causes social anxiety, or is in fact the result of an already existing social anxiety, I think it could go either way. The challenge, then, is to find morally acceptable means of alleviating or dealing with our pains and frustrations. Anyway, I’m also praying for the OP, and for all of us who are plagued by this or any of the other potentially addictive behaviors.

Right. Which is why initial attempts at withdrawal often fail, because the person is then flooded with the emotions they have been stuffing away with the addiction, but isn’t equipped yet to handle them in another way that is helpful and productive. The addiction is the quick fix, but it doesn’t fix the underlying problem (hence why addictions escalate).

I hope this doesn’t sound harsh, because I don’t mean it to be, but really, one thing that has stuck out at me researching and being treated for addiction is that a person actively engaged in addiction quits maturing and may even regress emotionally. They are consumed with the self, and as long as they focus on themselves and their fixes they cannot actually love others. If it comes to a sacrifice, even a small one, the fix will be more important (or become justified because hey, the addict did one turn for someone else.) It’s no surprise that social anxiety would become a problem because addicts can’t relate to other people normally, until they cast the addiction aside. I think something like pornography makes this even harder because the addiction by definition involves using other people as part of the addiction, rather than simply a means to get whatever substance (or engage in behavior.)

Just something to think about.
