I know that porn is sinful. But, I would like to know why watching porn is sinful, and why watching another sin, such as a murder, is not. Or, is watching all sins considered sinful? Please help me out. Thank you in advance and God bless to all those who post on this thread!

Does watching say a murder on television cause you to lust? Lusting is sinful. Watching porn causes lust; not to mention it lines the pockets of those who USE women to get rich while at the same time dehumanizing the woman (someone’s sister, daughter, mother, etc). God bless.
 
Who says watching murder on TV is never sinful? If watching murder on TV makes you feel that murder (or violence) might be an enjoyable thing, or an OK thing to do, or worse still makes you want to go out and murder (or do violence against) someone yourself, then of course it’s sinful for you to watch it.

See that’s the important difference - porn is designed for one thing and one thing only, to arouse you - to make you want to do whatever sinful act is depicted in that movie. And people who it doesn’t do these things for won’t watch it for other reasons either, usually, they find it boring and incomprehensible.

Depictions of murder aren’t designed to make you WANT to kill or be violent to others. Although unfortunately they may do so sometimes, and for those people for whom they do it would be sinful to watch them, in general they don’t and aren’t.

Remember too that porn is real people having real sex, really sinning in different ways, be it fornication or whatever. By watching it you’re contributing (an accessory) to their sins. Murder depictions are NEVER real.
 
Maybe because being naked or seen naked without marriage considered a sin or leads to a sin, that is why God made garments of skin for Adam and Eve and clothed them.

No, by paying for it, you’re contributing (an accessory) to their sins… right? :confused:
 
While paying to watch porn is certainly making yourself an accessory to it, “just” watching it does, too. On the internet, even if the site is “free,” you are still paying for it, because the advertisers pay. They pay to get their ads to your eyes. Your “click” on the website generates income for the website.

And borrowing porn from friends is also being an accessory, because (at the least) you are reinforcing your friend’s idea that it is OK to watch.

There is so much wrong with pornography that what I’ve written above seems like small quibbles to me. There is the ugly distortion of what sexuality is supposed to be; there is the fact that no real woman can live up to the phony sexual “ideals” presented by porn; there is the fact that, to a wife, her husband’s use of porn is a kind of infidelity; there is the fact that “acting” in porn movies constitutes a form of sexual abuse (the idea that one’s body is only worth what someone else is willing to pay in money for it)… I could go on and on.

Bottom line: stay away from porn. It perverts God’s gift of sexuality.
 
One point no one has brought up - to watch an actual murder on film is pornography. “Snuff Films” are another kind of porn.

If you are talking about dramatized movie acting murder, well, that is not an actual murder but actors playing. BIG difference. Can watching the play acting cause you to sin, for some people it could.
 
If you had a close family member that you love very much who chose to star in a porn video would you want others lusting after them thus viewing them as mere objects for their sexual gratification?? Neither does God…We are His close family members that He infinitely loves…even porn stars…teachccd
 
Porn is destructive. It is addictive. Causes men to be impure with themselves. Causes men to objectify women. Leads to impure thoughts.

Basically it is bad news. Dont fall into the trap of watching it.

Remember the punishment for watching porn is the pleasure you receive. Hey? Yes pleasure. This pleasure leads to an addiction and before you know it you are suffering the effects of being addicted to pornography. You need it. Daily. Thoughts fill your mind.

Being naked or seen naked without marriage is not considered sin. Pope John Paul II taught that porn is not sinful because it shows too much of the body. It is sinful because it shows too little of the person. There are times when nudity (in tastefully done art, for example) shows the beauty of the human person - physically and spiritually.

Similarly, sexual attraction is not sinful either. Lust is not defined as sexual attraction or even as arousal. Lust is defined as sexual attraction or arousal without love - seeing a person as an object to be used rather than as a person to be loved. :cool:
 
so ur saying even looking at naked women in enjoyment, its wrong?
 
Most people when watching porn become instantly aroused. I would argue watching murder is harmful even though you do not feel the effects of it right away like porn. I think watching murder/violence on tv causes a lot of people to be angry and causes a lot of depression and anxiety. All of these emotions separate you from God, although it is not immediately recognizable the way it is with porn. It is more subtle.

I stopped watching violent movies long ago. They disturbed me to no end. Even after that I occasionally watched porn which I quit. Now I don’t watch tv at all because there is too much smut on it–even normal tv. I don’t think something needs to be hardcore porn to put the wrong ideas into your head and lust in your heart.

Pornography is selfish. Sex, as created by God, is the giving of one’s self to another freely, totally, faithfully and fruitfully.

Watching murder could very well be sinful. If watching a violent movie causes you to reenact violent scenes in your head, I would say that that is sinful. If it spurs you on to be angry and wrathful to those around you, it’s sinful. If you use a particular insult you saw on a movie or tv to bring somebody down, that’s sinful.
 
I agree with Mirror. Sex is the most amazing gift God gave to us, but it is an awesome power as well, reserved only to husband and wife in the marital embrace.

Pornography throws all of that out the window!!!
 
Porn is very destructive to the souls in the pictures/movies…destructive to the person viewing it and can destroy the porn viewers’ relationship with his/her mate ( self-esteem, equilibrium, etc.) Porn tears apart trust, fidelity, and cannot help but make its way into the bedroom (takes away the intimacy of a couple, their innocence together in love making etc.) A woman can sniff that out in a minute and unfortunately many women allow that in their bedrooms thinking it is ‘normal.’

I pray that if you are struggling with this sin that you get help…it builds on itself and can become uncontrollable. My next door neighbor is getting a divorce because of an ‘innocent’ porn addiction. The husband got so addicted (slowly over time) that he began acting out and finding women over the internet and meeting them for liasons. He was a born again Christian too and has destoyed his family over it (and now wonders if he was ever ‘saved’ in the first place.)

If you are Catholic…keep going to Confession, asking to be healed of it and seek addiction counseling (behavior modification treatment). Rout it out. Receive the Eucharist for strength and ask St. Joseph to help you and the angels. It is a spiritual battle. Let’s pray for all of our men and women who are struggling with this demon. Its like taking a ‘little’ poison…pretty soon no one can drink the water.

If I can get theological with you - sin is an evil that is chosen by the will. If I have chosen to watch a movie that contains a murder scene I can watch the murder scene and be repulsed by the evil. As long as my heart is not oriented toward the evil - as long as I do not rejoice in it or thrill to it - I have not sinned. I think it’s easier to do with depictions of violent evil than it is to do with pornography. When I see a sexy scene, I immediately wish I were there. I therefore choose lust. Pornography is designed to create such a choice.

That is not to say that scenes of violence and murder are good. They **can **lead us to choose evil (as Spirithound pointed out) - either by leading us to rejoice in the evil or by actually inciting us to perform evil acts. They can also desensitize us to evil so that as individuals and as a culture we need more and more violent stimulation to keep us excited. These things are evil. However, it is not automatically sinful to watch a murder scene in a movie. There are even times when they are tastefully done, and they appropriately lead you to be be repulsed by an evil.

Really good points, Arrowood. I’m reflecting on “why” it’s easier to keep our heart not oriented towards the violence than it is to pornography, and I think the critical difference is that pornography takes something that is good, sexual intercourse between husband and wife, and it perverts it in all kinds of ways, and it glorifies these perversions. Killing someone is never a good thing, and so we naturally do not have the same draw towards it.
 
Murder and killing in movies is not real. The person really gets up after the scene is shot and probably has lunch. Most people become desensitized by the amount of violence, but it carrying over into their personal lives and having a direct effect of addiction of the flesh is minimal.

Porn, is real. The scenes are real. Kissing is real. (and everything after that is too.) The martial act is sacred and should be treated as thus. Which means that most women are being treated as objects and their dignity being ripped from them and men are being slaves to an addiction that can ruin their lives from their distorted fantasies being carried out in their own marriage which ultimately destroys them in the end.

I’ve had friends struggle with porn. Men who wanted to stop for the sake of their families. As stated, killing is never a good thing either, but porn is on a whole other level IMHO.
