Porn / Romantic films?

I too liked to watch those movies as entertainment… but for my critic sense I really think that especially *Pride and Prejudice *is very superficial… Its not even romantic if you consider it. It describes a sad time of English history where a woman was only something inasmuch as she could marry and that according to her rank.
I enjoyed the movie but the love story in it had no meat on it.

*Sense and Sensibility *had more of a love story…

Anyway… the question is really interesting… I thought I’d have a list of good love stories on my tongue … but 🤷
I had the same kind of trouble with Pride and Prejudice at first, but upon a second read, I changed my mind. It really is about the title of the book. Elizabeth and Mr. Darcy each had to overcome their own pride and their own prejudices to see that, despite cultural norms and rules, they were exactly the same sort of people, and very well suited to each other. I think it was another way of Austen commenting of the ridiculousness of the era, as she so often did, and with very good reason. 👍

And I think men could learn a bit (both about how to act and how not to act) from reading Austen. She writes true romance, which often catches us by surprise, as opposed to the sugary stuff of the average “romance” novel. Bleh.

I take the chance…

how about “Die Leiden des Jungen Werthers” *The sufferings of young Werther? *Its written by Goethe…
Its from the time of the baroc period or something like that and its about a young man who falls in love with a woman, Charlotte. When he finds out she is engaged to another man he shoots himself and suffers a painful death.

I remember sobbing when I read it and had to make a speech on it for my German class…

The funny thing is that when Goethe published it it became so famous that young men and women dressed like the characters in the story, young soldiers had a copy of the book with them and as far as I remember… there were even some who imitated the “suicide for love”-trend…

I know you two are just joking around, and I always take things too literally, but I read my brother’s Archie comics in the late 70’s and early 80’s. Back then I just thought it was stupid, but now I think it’s humiliating for Betty and Veronica to always be competing with each other for Archie’s attention. Let him make a choice and live with it already. Any guy who can’t make up his mind after how many decades 😛 isn’t worth having. Sheesh.
Hah. I don’t really like seeing women compete for a man’s attention, either. Sometimes it’s fine, however, just when it actually isn’t humiliating to anyone. It isn’t always. 😉
But seriously, what great piece of genuine romantic literature would you recommend for men (or even women for that matter) to read?
I’d start with 19th century historical novels. Close to 19th century romance novels, but not yet there. I generally prefer to have the romantic part contained in a meaningful plot. Otherwise it becomes suffocating.

If watching porn is wrong since it distorts mens perception of real women etc.
Well, I don’t believe it distorts people’s perceptions of either sex and it’s pretty insulting to mine (I’m female) or my partner’s intelligence to suggest that watching porn does this.

I’m not catholic, by the way, I came to this site for some pregnancy advice, sorry if I’ve trodden on anyone’s toes, I just saw this assertion and felt strongly that I wanted to answer it.

Hey Doris.
Welcome to CF. I think you might find many oppinions here quite far from what you have learned to believe by secular culture. Up until recently every woman would know in her heart that porn is greatly degrading to participate in and to watch. Its actually prostitution. Lets call it by its name.
I felt repulsed by it even when I was not a Christian. I always knew that a man who was exited by porn was less than the man I was hpoing to spend my life with.
Being a Christian has confirmed this inner repulsion to the objectification of women and men and the trivilisation of sex that takes place throughout all of our western culture. I now look for a man who wants to make beautiful love to one woman and only one… not watch dirty pictures and get aroused by distorted bodies and images of behaviour that isnt even worthy of an animal.
I would regard a significant other´s use of porn as infidelity and, as we call it as Christians, adultery… since he/she would be having sex with porn.

Anyway… thanks for expressing your oppinion about this too. We all have a right to our oppinion… I am sure you agree on that.

Also its good to test once in a while to see if we have been manipulated or merely raised to believe that something is okay or not… whether by a religion or by an atheistic world view. We need to ask our questions about what we see and find the answer in our heart. Let the measurement be the love and dreams you have in you as a woman, a wife, a mother and a human individual with dignity.

Peace.

Grace, we also need your wisdom on “Non-Catholic Religions” forum from time to time.
:blessyou:

Porn is exploitive, addictive, selfish and one of the Devils great weapons to enslave us.

Would you want your children to work in the Porn industry.

Any answer other than the negative and there is likely something very wrong with you.

So if you wouldn’t want your own family to take part in the insidious industry, why is it Ok to watch other people’s family members on the monitor or screen?

Welcome to Catholic Answers. 🙂 If you’re ever curious as to why we have such strong views about pornography, please visit the online Catechism of the Catholic Church: scborromeo.org/ccc.htm

Peace to you,

Mary
