Hello All,

I seriously need some factual studies on the dangers of pornography.

This is basically for a debate with an atheist about the empirical dangers of pornography to society, the family and the individual.

What I ideally need are internet ready published works or some repute. I am having a tough time finding this stuff which I am finding quite odd. I need facts too, such as all the questions asked, the long term effects, the amount of people studied ect ect.

Assuming you’re dead serious, and are taking an educated person’s approach toward the argument, you might have some better luck if you contact a University library and see if they might have access to some peer-reviewed papers on the topics…

I find most non-believers who defend pornography defend it from the point of view of their own rights to view it, but rarely consider the victimization and damaged dignity of the actors or people posing for it. The porn industry is not a pretty industry with good working conditions, a 401k, pension, dental and medical plans, and 3 weeks paid vacation per year. Added to all that, it strips away the actor’s dignity by making a mockery of his or her intimacy.

Non-believers who defend it need to ask themselves first: would I want my son or daughter to work in that industry and have all manner perverts see them do things that should be reserved for the intimacy of the marriage bed, or shouldn’t be done at all?

Also look into social justice related information regarding the porn industry,

This following song portrays the social evil of pornography from a very personal perspective. It’s not really my type of music, but the message is undeniably harrowing: “Constance” by J. Medieros

I’d be interested in reading some studies too. However I wonder if a “study” can really do this evil justice.

In my opinion it is possibly the most damaging aspect to our society; certainly to the family. The pain it causes so many people, the divergence of proper attention to the ones you are called to love, the preoccupation, the addictive nature…and mostly, the pain it must cause the wives who know thier husband is dabbling in it. The hurt must be so deep and so personal.

Such an awful thing and so widely accepted by society now.

From what I’ve heard from experts, including psychology professors from my Catholic college, the only conclusive negative effect pornography has on the consumer is that violent porn increases chances of rape. This is because rape is about power, rather than just sex. That’s why sometimes old people, rather than younger and more attractive people, are victims of rape.

The following has noted that there is a negative correlation between internet access and/or porn and rape, meaning that where there is more internet access or porn, there tends to be less rape. Of course, correlation doesn’t mean causation. After all, it’s a well known fact that there is an exact correlation between bars and churches in a given populated area.

This may not have been what you were looking for. After all, the CC doesn’t hold that pornography is wrong because of its effects.

Amen! 👍

Generally, long term studies are only attempted after carefully weighing up all potential variables. With something like pornography, I’d guess there are too many other things going on in society to pin anything down, therefore few studies have been done, which may be why you can’t find any.

For the same reasons, they probably wouldn’t convince the atheist.

A better debating tactic might be to ask whether he sends out porno Christmas cards to friends and family. Does he have a porno picture for his screen saver at work. Does he leave his porno on the coffee table for visitors and their kids. You get the idea. 😃

If he doesn’t then he’s made your point for you, and very empirically to boot. If he does, make your excuses and leave.

And does he encourage his kids to study “porno acting 101” at college? Or get a summer job acting in porn flicks?

I would guess not. And if it’s undesirable for his own daughter or son to work in that industry, why on earth would it be OK for anybody else’s son or daughter to work in that industry? Probably his answer is that “it’s not my problem”.

Thing is, if he is a consumer of porn, he is part of the problem.

…I’m not clear as to where you made the jump from somebody being alright with pornography to them having no sense of personal privacy. Do you reveal details of your sexual proclivities in your Christmas cards?

I wouldn’t particularly want any hypothetical child of mine to work in fast food, either, or pave roads, or be a janitor, because I would hope they would have the aptitude for something a bit more complicated. If they didn’t though, I wouldn’t have a problem with them working in any of those jobs, or in pornography, as long as they were safe and happy.

Maybe Jesus IS coming soon.

How does a particular field being “complicated” make it more noble (in your eyes)?

I bet you would have a huge problem with it if you were to actually see your son or daughter in a porno flick.

If you don’t, I feel very sorry for you.

And you wife/husband agrees with all of that?

OP - expand OraLabora’s classy argument until it creeps you out. The atheist is happily married and dotes on his lovely daughter. When she turns eighteen, they have a family conference and all agree her best career is in porno. He pays her fees to porno academy. He has long walks with her discussing aesthetics and other technicalities. Later he and his wife invite the neighbors round to proudly show them her first porn movie.

Bursting with pride, his wife sends out Christmas cards with pictures of her daughter posing provocatively. His screen saver at work is the same. He collects the magazines in which she appears and keeps them on the coffee table for visitors and their kids.

There’s a world of difference between protecting privacy and feeling shame. Even the most liberal free-thinking atheist can see that porno is wrong because it objectifies someone else’s daughter. Can’t they?

You’d be surprised at how many so-called “parents” are supportive of their child’s involvement in porn. I used to be a big porn watcher and every year, the porn industry has an awards ceremony. I caught a ceremony one year and was surprised to see how many parents turned up with their daughters to watch them get an award for some tawdry performance - and to even watch a brief clip of it!

Even back then, I knew that was just sick.

There are plenty who do - and a sad but large number who do not. When you reject Christ, you can find a way to justify absolutely anything, including the whoring of your child in the porn industry. Heck, I remember several discussions when I circulated amongst that crowd on an online ex-christian forum that justified pedophilia and incest as matters of personal choice!

When you remove Christ, the source of all truth, you can justify anything.
