“Portrait of Jennie” is a nice, atmospheric film that is well-acted. I’d grab “Miracle of the Bells” if you want to see all that atmospheric sentiment in a Catholic cultural setting.

“Miracle of the Bells” stars Alida Valli, the brilliant actress that made only one other film, “The Third Man,” by Catholic author Graham Greene and also starring Joseph Cotton. And don’t forget Jennifer Jones as Bernadette Soubirous in the adaptation of Jewish author Franz Werfel’s “Song of Bernadette.” Franz Werfel stopped at Lourdes in fleeing the NAZI’s, inspiring him to pledge this brilliant account of the Immaculate Conception’s appearances to this now-incorrupt saint if he made it to America, which under FDR was not welcoming Jewish refugees. He made it and this film is very faithful to his historic “novel” with names changed to protect the guilty.
