I’m looking for a nice Bible in Portuguese similar in style to the RSV-CE or NRSV for a Brazilian friend.

It should not read like the Douay Rheims but should have a more modern, readable rendering.

To be clear, I am looking for a physical Bible, not an electronic version. Leather, ribbon, gilt pages would all be nice.

I’m flying blind because I don’t understand Portuguese. Any help would be appreciated.

According to the Wikipedia article on Portuguese Bibles, the translation of the Bible that is published by the Brazilian Conference of Catholic Bishops is called the Bíblia Sagrada da CNBB. It is based off the texts used in the Lectionary, but revised.

Or this Google Translation version of that same page: translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&js=n&prev=_t&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.paulinas.org.br%2Floja%2F%3Fsystem%3Dprodutos%26action%3Ddetalhes%26produto%3D099708&act=url

I’ve also seen the following Bibles recommended:
There is an English edition of the Jerusalem Bible and it is very poetic. The RSV-CE seems to be an attempt to make the Bible readable but preserve the traditional “feel” of the English Bible. If I had to guess, I would guess that there is no Catholic equivalent in the Brazil, since they didn’t have the same history that we did that led to our traditional “Bible-speak.” But I think the best shot you have of getting something similar would be either in da Bíblia da Ave-Maria or in the CNBB one.

Please let me know if that helps.

This is the Bible I use at home (I live in Brazil), except that mine is a much earlier edition (1987). The extensive footnotes are what makes the difference, for me, between this edition of the Jerusalem Bible and other Brazilian Bibles, such as the Bíblia Ave Maria.

A word of warning. Don’t expect to find the same quality in a Brazilian product that you would expect from an American manufacturer, in terms of paper, printing, and binding. But your Brazilian friends will know that already, so it won’t come as a disappointment to them.

Prices: the current exchange rate is about 3.40 reais to the dollar, so the net price of 53.90 reais is equivalent to around $16. I don’t know how much Amazon.com.br will charge you for shipping to the United States, but it may be pretty expensive.

If you’d like any further help, feel free to send me a private message.

Regards
Bart
