I am a youth minister. The story from two weeks ago - one of my young adults (19) brought me to meet with his girlfriend (who i didn’t know) who says she has been seeing 2 “demons” every night when she sleeps since she was 10. I believe she is 18 or 19. I was kinda surpised to hear this - it caught me off guard. she was registered to come on a retreat weekend for youth, and leading up to the retreat she said the demon was sitting on her chest and chocking her. I tried to calm her down, and prayed with her. I gave her blessed salt (that’s all i had) and told her to sprinkle it in her room. On the weekend we had confession and although she isn’t Catholic, I told her to still and just go and talk with the priest. The priest prayed with her and said if it continues she will need an exorcism. (this is not the pastor) after the weekend she didn’t see them for about a week, but now she said they are back…

i’m not sure what I should do. I have been encouraging her to come out to church events and to mass to try and introduce her to the Church and Jesus. Since she isn’t Catholic and has little understanding of the Church, it makes it difficult to help direct her.

Any suggestions would be helpful. I understand some sort of mental illness could be at play or it could be genuine. Thoughts?

Demons attack for a reason, they like to take advantage of our weakened state or our absence of Faith.

It’s possible she has done something, she feels guilty about, and hasn’t forgiven herself, she needs to do Confession, Confession is actually key to absolving all demonic influence. Some people would rather walk for the rest of their lives than to confess their guilt, and it is this guilt that holds us down. The demon that sits on her chest is a Guilt Demon, Confession is the only way to go.

Get her this CD, some Parishes have them in their Gift shops, they sell for $3 or from here:

Another Cool book is
“An Exorcist tells his Story”, he also mentions that Confession is a powerful tool against the Devil and his demons.

Thank you for your response. However I mentioned she is not Catholic (not yet anyway). so she can’t receive absolution. I’m not sure of her intent is. How do we deal with the immediate situation without Confession, b/c even if she were to become Catholic, it would be almost a year b/f she could do so with the RCIA process.

Well first of all, I would talk with the pastor. We are mostly lay people here, and you need to speak to someone in authority.

Has she been baptized? Is she interested in becoming a Christian?

I would probably give her some holy water, and teach her the Jesus prayer. IF this is actually real, she may have to put up with it until she becomes a Christian. People can come into the church at any time during the year, it doesn’t *have *to be at Easter. There may be someone in RCIA who can teach her the essentials of the faith so her communion with the church can happen sooner.

Sometimes recovering non-Catholic alcoholics will “confess” to a priest. Check around for a priest who knows how to help a person ask God for forgiveness. Since the Sacrament of Reconciliation includes future graces to help the person, the “confession” may include prayers for God’s help.

Do teach her the prayer to St. Michael. And pray that prayer yourself in her name.

I would also see if she would be willing to pray the St. Michael prayer.

Wow. That sounds scary. I hope she gets the help that she needs.

When you mention “demon was sitting on her chest and choking her” - I thought of sleep paralysis. If the ‘demon’ has be sitting on her chest since she was 10 yrs old then she may have a significant sleep disorder that needs investigation.

I would also expect that if she was experiencing diabolical issues then she would be affected during the day as well and be witnessing other unusual things. That others around and helping her would also experience diabolical events.

If you feel that she has a mental illness and is unstable at the moment then seek or advise medical review.

Best of luck on this one.

Usually the “sitting on chest” sensation is part of a waking dream (I think “sleep paralysis” is the term). I’ve had dreams like that, except my mind automatically blamed my brothers! Not fun, but not necessarily a spiritual warfare thing.

It’s also possible that the young person has schizophrenia, manic depression, or other fun stuff. (Or even schizophrenia, sleep paralysis, and real demons too, for all I know.)

Demons or no demons, you should have her talk to a priest, get some medical and shrink checkups, and so on. What you’ve done is fine, but this person needs a coordinated approach to finding out what’s wrong and doing something to help her. Your priest can probably get help in these areas more easily than you can. Don’t be scared, but do it.
