If a job can be learned in a few days, it is not a job that requires a lot of background

One always has a background, and learning is for life. I ended up learning a lot, and eventually became division chief, although when I started, the industry was new to me.

But every job search is unique; you have to decide for yourself which leads to pursue and which to drop. I do think, though, that one should not necessarily lock oneself in to a predetermined career path.

It is responses like this that make it so hard to be unemployed. People are so insensitive. God gave me reason and I know when a lead is good and when it is most probably a dead end. I will not be so ignorant to think I can do a job I do not have the qualification for. If you lie to a company once, they will remember you forever. It is better to be honest about your abilities than to burn your bridges with a reputable company.

It is as you are implying that someone who has never been to medical school can apply for a job as a doctor and do it Doesn’t work that way

No one is telling you to lie…just don’t automatically assume because you haven’t done a particular job before that you would not be able to do it. Both DH and myself have been through periods of unemployment and job searches…most people have. Our experiences are that a positive and open attitude really helps. This is not being insensitive.

Yes, someone did tell her to lie. That is part of what the whole thing is about! Nancy suggested she pad her resume with untrue information, in other words lie. Nancy is the person who offered to give her resume to the employer. Once Nancy found out she lacked key experience for the position, she implied that if her resume was not padded or did not reflect experience necessary, she was not sure if she would give hers or someone else’s, after she practically insisted Angie give her the resume to pass on. Angie did not want to apply because she knew she lacked key experience. But Nancy insisted.

The issue is Nancy is jerking Angie around.

The person who said to start screening Nacy’s calls is spot on. The longer this thread gets, the more it is apparent that Angie and Nancy just will never get along. That’s fine. But if Angie doesn’t like or fully trust Nancy, than she should get used to saying “Thanks, but no thanks.”

I agree that each person knows best what they are good at and what sort of work they’d be comfortable doing. I don’t think Angie is afraid of learning new things or taking a job that may be a stretch, but she can’t simply move into a new career path on a whim.

Angie, perhaps there is another networking group that may be more helpful for you. Or start looking for work in nearby areas, not just your own city. I will pray for your future employment; it is a difficult market right now, but please don’t be discouraged.

As someone said, you don’t run after chickens thinking you will catch one. I have been unemployed long enough to know there are cruel people who will play on your misfortunes and send you on a wild goose chase by purposely giving wrong information

and never assume you can’t do a job…

I have quote this post but it is in response to your other post where you said ‘no one is telling me to lie’. The only way I can get an interview for a job for which I do not have the qualifications is to lie on my resume.

In Canada to be a teacher, you need your teaching certificate. I don’t have one so I would have to lie if I want to get the interview.

What you posted here is very different than saying ‘Apply for a job in which you can transfer your skills’

I didn’t assume she was a headhunter. I asked, “Is she a headhunter?”

But your post gave several response saying ‘if Nancy is a head hunter that is why she did xyz’ That is very close to assuming

I reread my original post and I can see how it was unclear. Nancy was telling me to put things on that I never did. And twisting what I did (by a lot) to talk me into including it. I have sat in enough interviews to know a person worth working for knows when you are not honest.

And I have not mentioned this before but as I say my former employer as part of my severance package paid for a very sophisticated agency to give me guidance. Whenever I share an idea with Nancy (which Nancy does not realize I learned at the agency) she ALWAYS contradicts it. And Nancy talks as if she is an authority and knows everything. Yet, the proof is in the pudding. She has been carrying on and on for over 5 years how she wants to switch jobs, yet is still working at her father’s company. I can not trust this woman

I don’t doubt you learned a lot but it did not happen in a few days. If you managed to learn a whole new job in a few days it means either there was not much to learn or you had enough or a similar background they though you could do it

I agree and I apply for several jobs that would be a switch yet I know I have the transferable skills. However, since I do not have the exact experience, no one calls me. It even baffles head hunters that I have so many awesome transferrable skills that companies won’t give me a chance because I don’t have the 2 years exact experience

Stuff like that was happening to me a lot, and I didn’t match almost any ads in my professional field. Had to register a business to have a job.
