As some of you know, my husband and I don’t exactly see eye to eye as far as faith. (I’m a revert/convert Catholic, baptized in the Church but not raised in it, finally back home. He’s a non-practicing Christian, believes in the basic OSAS, but doesn’t have interest in attending any church at all.)

Anyway, he said something interesting today. He’s feeling depressed since he feels like something is missing in his life, but he doesn’t know what. My heart fairly leaped in my chest, but I don’t know if I should nudge him back to Mass to see if experiencing God is what he’s missing. I don’t want to make him want to even less, or make him feel obligated to go. I’ve been praying that he be able to experience and love Mass the way I do. Should I wait and see, or should I subtly suggest stuff, and in that case suggest what exactly? I feel this could be a major turning point and I really, really do not want to blow it!

Sorry this is kind of jumbled, I’m going a little nuts over this.

It sounds like he used to go with you at one time if you wish to nudge him back?

Perhaps you can just say, you know, I miss the days when you used to come to mass with me. It made me feel close to you.

He will either go with you or not. But he cannot say that you bugging him or nagging him.
But it might just put the thought into his head to go.

I would ask him, but only once. If you push the issue, you will push him away from the Church rather than toward it.

If your husband is depressed, I would begin with prayer. The power of a husband and wife praying together is powerful. Perhaps you can say a short prayer where you ask God to bless him and help him with his depression? Tell your husband you love him and desire to pray with him. Hold hands perhaps and say something short and sweet together? Whatever would be most natural for the two of you and make him the most comfortable would be my choice. Always make sure it is regular, gentle and loving.

I would also make sure that your husband knows you appreciate him for being a good Christian man. Try to tell him often in positive ways that despite the fact you have faith differences you appreciate how you are so blessed to have such a good Christian man as a husband that supports your faith journey! Otherwise he might feel a sense of dissatisfaction from you that is looming over your marriage, that will not help you in this situation either if that is the case.

I will pray for his depression, his conversion and your marriage. God bless.

My husband is basically the same way. He is actually a baptized Orthodox, but his family rarely went to church. He really knows little about his faith. We were married civilly 17 years ago. I was not practicing at that time, although, I am a cradle Catholic. I returned to church about 4 years ago. We had our marriage blessed, last year, after obtaining annulments for first marriage.

I have become religious and the only one in my family attending church. Although, my daughter just started to attend, as my grandson is making his First Holy Communion.

I will invite my husband to go to Eucharistic adoration with me. He attended once with me and agreed that it was nice. He does not believe in any church and thinks they are all about money. He believes that he is a good person and prays at home, so he is good. However, he told me that he would go to adoration with me sometimes.

I do not ask him to go to mass with me. However, I asked him to attend mass when my grandson makes his First Holy Communion. He agreed to go for the occasion. I will not ask him to go with me, except for special occasions. I just continue to pray for him.

I was in your very situation not long ago. I had been attending mass with my oldest son and eventually chose to convert to Catholicism. (This was a very big deal as I am from a family of four generations of protestants and my father is a protestant minister :)) My husband gave me his blessing but outright told me he had no intentions of going to mass or becoming Roman Catholic. He was a Christian, as we both have been our entire marriage. We agreed to continue attending our local church on Sunday mornings and I would go to Mass on Sunday night alone or with my college son. I was very tempted to nudge him into going with me when he would ask me questions or make comments that led me to believe he was interested. However, I continued to attend mass, be still, and pray for him and pray my Rosary intentions for him along with asking for Mama Mary’s intercession. I asked God to give me wisdom and on the Saturday before Mother’s Day last year he mentioned going to Sunday Mass with me and even taking our two youngest. We went and he has never looked back.He was recently confirmed and baptized. I cannot even express to you how much joy we both feel now that we are finally home. Four of my children are home and God is definitely working on the other two. I will keep you and your husband in my prayers. I have found that for me, I often get excited and find myself running ahead of God (St Peter is my patron Saint:) } However, His way is always best and He doesn’t necessarily need my help 🙂
