I will take your word for it. I have only really read one book on the subject, and that was several years ago, cannot even remember the name of it (will check on my bookshelf when I get home). I do recall that this biography was slanted and implied Pascal was a Jansenist, which I did not find convincing. Its presentation of the Jesuits seemed to fit with the other historical reading I had come across in the past.
I certainly spoke a little too strongly, cannot back up my post much at all. Apologies to all.

ETA: I have read all of the Pensees, some of them multiple times, and I find them very, very good.

So, then, by your own admission, not everything is black & white. 😉

No, it is black and white because it is clear. Clarity is similar to contrast, in that we see clearly by means of well defined lines.

So, although you can have a norm and dispensations from a norm, this is not “unclear.” It’s quite clear on the basis of clear principles.

For example, a person who is living in an adulterous second marriage cannot receive communion, by being a public and notoriously unrepentant sinner.

But if he converts and puts away the conjugal acts in his relationship, while seeking after charity in repentance, he can, because the principle is repentance evidenced by concrete action to the contrary.

lol, this isn’t even close to messy. It’s principled!

Your subject line is a little bit misleading. There is no dispute at all between the US Government and the Holy See.

The dispute is between the pope and US bishops
