Graffiti was discovered on the Cathedral of St. Paul last weekend and police are investigating it as a possible hate crime.

White-colored upside down crosses were spray painted on five of the six main doors on the Summit Avenue side, according to a police incident report. It happened between Friday night and Saturday morning.

Police received an initial call about the incident Saturday and generated a police report Monday.

“It was dealt with immediately,” Dennis McGrath, spokesman for the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis, said today. “It’s been removed. It could have been a prank, it could have been kids, it could have been somebody with an angry vendetta against the church.”

The investigation into whether the graffiti was a bias-motivated crime is because of the upside down crosses on the church and “what they have to come to symbolize in popular culture,” said Sgt. Pete Crum, a St. Paul police spokesman.

The upside down cross has come to signify Satanism or to be an anti-Christ symbol, according to websites.

It’s interesting that the inverted cross has become a satanist symbol, given the fact that one of the holiest saints in history chose to die in the fashion depicted by it. :o Perhaps we have some providence here, in that one of the responding sergeants is called “Pete”(r)! 😃

Inverted cross? I thought the Satanist symbol was an upside-down 5-sided star with a circle around it. Interesting…

Well, St. Peter asked to be crucified upside down because he didn’t believe he deserved to die like Our Lord. So the inverted cross represents him.

I guess it’s just some kids who think they’re being “rebelious.”

That’s called a pentagram, and yes, when upside down, it is a satanist symbol. But I think sometimes, on really, really old churches you will see them right-side up. I think It’s a symbol of the five wounds of Christ.

While an inverted pentagram has been used as a Satanist symbol…it is also a symbol of 2nd degree Wicca…not an evil symbol…but represents “matter”…“earth” “air” “fire” “water” balanced by “spirit”.

The upside down cross is also a Satanist symbol…probably more appropriate since “Satanism” is more of a “Christian sect” than a pagan one…one must believe in the Christian devil to be a “satan worshipper”…modern Satanists…of the Anton LaVey variety tend to be “atheistic”…Michael Acquino’s “Temple of Set” is “religiously satanic”…they tend to view Set, the ancient Egyptian god of the underworld as the precurser for the “Christian devil”.

Do any of you remember Rosemary’s Baby? An inverted cross was hung over the child’s crib…most of our ideas come from Hollywood it seems. I seriously doubt it was “Satanist”…probably kids…“wanna be Satanists”.

How disgusting. I really don’t understand why people do stupid stuff like this. I mean really. It is really stupid that people commit crimes such as this. Not only is it hateful but it is also immature. In my opinion, a person must not be very intelligent to do things like this.
