Possible SSPX Return to Church?

Fr Fellay accepted an episcopal ordination he knew was illicit, accepted election to lead a society he knew was irregular, and has rejected the Church.

I’ve never seen the kinds of stuff the so-called “traditionalists” so often scream and rant about. Locally, the Roman Rite Dioceses are all filled with reverent liturgies.
  1. Its Bishop Fellay, not Fr. He is a validly ordained Bishop and should be accorded the respect due his office. You wouldn’t like it if people called Pope Benedict XVI “Cardinal Ratzinger” or referred to other Bishops as Fr. would you?
  2. Its not just about the form of the liturgies. The content is just as important. The prayers of the Novus Ordo are equally important (if not more so) than whether its in Latin and Ad-Orientam.
  3. He has not rejected the Church by any means. Please provide evidence for that slanderous claim. Last I checked he is at the front of the efforts to remove the irregular status of the SSPX, meets with the Pope, and prays for the Church and the Pope.

According to this statement the same could be said for the sede vacanists-apparently the line here is very thin, almost blurred.
Well yes, the same can be said of them. We should certainly be able to see where the sedevacanists are coming from. The Church went through a drastic upheaval - I for one can empathize with their position. At the same time, we must pray for their repentance, that hope (instead of despair) starts to fill their souls, and that they reject their heresy.

Just because you have not see them does not mean it does not happen.

The attempt is to reconcile the sspx to the Church, not the other way around. The article states that there are positions that the Holy See has said is “non-negotiable.” To echo the above sentiments, what will happen if the sspx walks away from this ? Will it finally be time to declare the sspx to be formally schismatic?
Certainly, it is possible that the SSPX clerics would be re-excommunicated or at least a document could be released re-affirming the fact of their materially schismatic and illicit non-canonical status which would prohibit Catholics from participating in their masses or partaking of their sacraments (with the exception of those in danger of imminent death).

As of now, they are in material schism and heresy, the ferendae sententiae excommunication has been removed just like how Pope Paul VI removed the excommunication of the Eastern Orthodox, but that does not mean that they are in full communion with the Church either. There is still a spiritual schism and physical disconnect.

Personally, I am not optimistic that the full SSPX will be re-united with Rome. I think perhaps some priests and bishops will decide to put old prejudices aside and jump ship over to Rome. Perhaps they’d join the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter or even make their own personal prelature. But, there will still inevitably be obstinate heretics and schismatics in the SSPX that will keep the schism going and will perhaps be similar to the Jansenists who permanently separated after the First Vatican Council.

#3 is the easiest: He continued to function despite notice of excommunication! He has contined to function as an ordinary despite no see assigned by Rome.

By the way, Fr. is an appropriate mode of address for all clerics except Roman Deacons. (but specifically including Byzantine deacons, priests, and bishops.)

Yes, he is continuing to function. But out of love for the Church NOT rejection of it.

Interesting tidbit. Learn something new everyday. I still think the first part of what I said holds true - he is Latin Rite after all.

Tehnically, he’s a vagante bishop. No recognized see, no licit ordination, no submission to Rome. Fr. Fellay was also referred to, consistently, by HH JP II… as were the other 3 SSPX bishops.

The four of them all knew the canon law on ordination. It changed only in numbering from the 1917 CIC to the 1983… It was known, as well, that only one new SSPX bishop was to be consecrated. They openly rejected the authority of Rome as established by Vatican I, Trent, and Holy Tradition.

Remember also: the attitude that the pope can be wrong on matters of faith done ex cathedra is contrary to Vatican I dogma. Promulgation of a missal is cearly an ex cathedra action.
