Do any known early versions or translations of Matthew 26:26 actually say, “Take and eat, this represents My Body” as I recently heard a non-Catholic minister say to his congregation? Is there some translational basis for using the word “represents” instead of the word “is” with respect to Holy Communion?

Hi gf,

Touto estin to sôma mou.* (This is the body mine).*

There is no way this can mean “represents”. The good minister is being creative.

Estin is third person singular of to be–in other words, it means IS.

Of course, as someone once said, it depends on what your meaning of “is” is.
