Hi everyone,
I have been trying to discern what kind of work God wants me to do. Lately, the idea of teaching and helping people to read has become prominent in my prayer. I love to read, and I know there are a lot of people who struggle because they either have no reading ability, or they are not up to their potential. I used to be a tutor and I remember one kid who was 14 years old and didn’t know how to read at all. And it wasn’t like he had a disability or dyslexia or something. No one ever tried to teach him and no one cared that he couldn’t read. I was astonished. If I could go back in time, I would’ve done everything I could to help him learn to read as best as he could. I didn’t know what to do at the time. I had no experience teaching reading, and my position as a tutor was terminated due to lack of funds in the program I was tutoring in.
I don’t know what sort of work I will do to pay the bills, etc. but I know that a mission that I think God wants me to pursue is to help people to read. I remember reading a book by Mother Teresa, where she added to the works of mercy listed in the parable of the sheep and the goats. “I was hungry, and you fed, me. I was thirsty and you gave me a drink.” etc. One of the works Mother Teresa added was “I was illiterate and you taught me to read.” There were others she added but that one has stuck with me for a while. And as I think about ways to help people learn to read and pray for God to help me learn how to teach people reading skills and habits, it just seems to fit me. It seems like it is something I know God wants me to do and promote for others. I love being around books. I used to work in the library when I was in high school. I volunteer at my library 8 hours a week. I plan to talk to the director of literacy programs at the library. Everyone knows me as being very well read, and often ask me for reading suggestions etc. I would love to do everything I can to help people who want to learn to read better to do so.
Please pray that if this is what God wants me to do, that I learn everything I need to succeed in helping people learn to read.
Thank you all for all your prayers. God bless you. Amen.
