Dalí returned to the Catholic faith in 1949. His journey home had started years earlier when he found himself stirred by the poetry of of the Spanish mystic St. John of the Cross.
Instead of painting a historical Last Supper as Leonardo did, Dalí gives us the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist.
 
The article is a great explanation of the painting. I never would have noticed many of those details or guessed at their symbolism.
