Crucifixion with Cardinal by Lucas Cranach the Elder 1472 – 1553

What is the significance of the Cardinal in the painting?

I found an interesting summary online, but I wonder if there is more to the story.
This work is linked to [John 19:25]. Cardinal Albrecht of Brandenburg kneels on a pillow before the crucified Jesus. Lucas Cranach made this painting for the cardinal while he was a friend and follower of Martin Luther, the German church reformer. Luther was involved in a theological battle with the cardinal’s catholic church.

Another one I liked of the Apostle Paul…

Herod’s Banquet by Domenico Ghirlandaio 1449 – 1494

Imagine being a guest at the banquet and having to act polite, normal, and sociable while looking at a man’s head on a platter. The Bible describes Herod as tricked into killing John the Baptist by a pretty dancer. It describes Herod as grieved at the whole thing.

I really like Father Mike Schmitz take on this story of the cripple at the pool of Bethasda. Jesus asks “Do you want to be well?” The point is that the healing will change your entire life and force you to learn to act as an entirely different person.

I also like the cripple’s response in John Chapter 5. He basically says that when the water is stirred up and he might get healed, somebody else always beats him to the water. In other words the cripple tried to be healed and he still is trying to get healed. There was perhaps still a desire in the cripple to win.
