In the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, we don’t sing the hymns of St. Thomas Aquinas. We have Byzantine Eucharistic hymns that are just as beautiful.

It’s unfortunate that many publishers have decided to delete this from their publications. I remember hearing it my first time, too, and thinking why it is not in every Catholic hymnal out there.

Our church actually prints a worship aid for Corpus Christi just so that we can sing it.

Its not 70s style folk music, it can’t be in a hymnal. 🙂

That’s nice, and I learned something too. I thought it sounded Anglican, and a little research turned up that it was written by Frederick William Faber, an Anglican who entered the Catholic Church in 1845.

Thanks for sharing! I am going to look him up. I almost memorized all the verses 😊 maybe this particular Father will do mass tomorrow!

He was the priest today and sang the hymn. I was able to sing along, it’s such a strong hymn to sing after just receiving the body, blood, soul and divinity of our Lord Jesus Christ. I’ll sing it to myself after every communion.

Sounds like “Anima Christi” to me. We also sing that song in a slightly different version though. It goes like this:

“Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Water from the side of Christ, wash me
Passion of Christ, give me strength
Hear me Jesus, hide me in thy wounds that I may never leave thy side.
From all the evil that surrounds me, defend me; and when the call of death arrives, bid me come to thee that I may praise thee with thy saints forever…”
