There is time after receving Communion to pray. There does not seem to be any guidance in the missal used at Mass as to what to pray about - or what prayers to use.

What should one pray about after receiving Holy Communion?

I pray in thanksgiving for the Eucharist, and remember those I’ve been asked to pray for.

Today, I silently added Jamie (whomever they are, a prayer request was posted for them), and an “Internet acquaintance” (His handle is UVTiO2, on another BBS, and he asked for prayers when his wife lost one of the two unborn children she was carrying… they’ve been trying for years to have children) during the prayers of the Faithful and after communion.

I also gave thanks to God for being allowed to be an EMHC, and for the closeness to God this brings to me.

In some missals is the following prayer,

Anima Christi, Mystical Communion:

Soul of Christ, sanctify me
Body of Christ, save me
Blood of Christ, inebriate me
Water from Christ’s side, wash me
Passion of Christ, strengthen me
O good Jesus, hear me
Within Thy wounds hide me
Suffer me not to be separated from Thee
From the malicious enemy defend me
In the hour of my death call me
And bid me come unto Thee
That I may praise Thee with Thy saints
and with Thy angels

Forever and ever
Amen

I pray this when I find it in the Missal after communion as it focuses me on the beautiful gift I have just received, and it keeps me from just sitting there rambling on to God, as my mind might wander.

I silently pray several of the Byzantine prayers from the DL that I miss most: “Holy God, Holy and Mighty, Holy and Imortal, Have mercy on us.”
“May the partaking of your Holy Mysteries, Oh Lord, be not for my judgement nor condemnation but for the for healing of soul and body, the remission of all my sins, and for live everlasting. Amen.”
“Oh Lord, have mercy on me. Oh Lord, be merciful to me, a sinner. Oh Lord, be merciful, for I have sinned without number.”

I also often pray 50, 100, or 150 “Lord have Mercy” or “Alleluia” if there is time.

if you have a missal there are usually prayers before and after communion printed somewhere. I call my Daily Roman Missal “the last prayerbook you will ever need” because it has such a good selection of prayers, especially suitable for after communion and for adoration.

the missalettes usually have prayers inside the back covers, or before or after the hymns, which usually include post-communion prayers and seasonal prayers as well.

personally, that time is so brief in our busy, noisy modern churches I prefer just to try for interior silence at that time.

Many years ago we had a priest who used the Anima Christi pray during adoration but used a more poetic version which I say to this day.

Soul of Christ be my sanctification
Body of Christ be my salvation
Blood of Christ fill all my veins
Water from Christ’s side wash out my stains
Passion of Christ my comfort be
O good Jesu listen to me
In Thy wounds I feign would hide
Never to be parted from Thy side
Guard me should the foe assail me
Protect me when my life shall fail me
Bid me then come to Thee above
With Thy saints to sing Thy love
For ever and ever.
Amen

Jesus is right there with you. Just talk to Him heart to heart. First I always just thank Him for coming to me. I tell Him I love Him. I ask Him to help me follow Him better. I pray for the needs of those I think of. I thank Him for things I’m happy about and ask for what I need. I spend some time appreciating the life of the Trinity and how we are so caught up in that life through Communion. I just talk to Him about whatever I think of. Sometimes I just enjoy Him being with me.

I just pray what’s in my heart–usually a prayer of thanksgiving, or sometimes just kneel there and say nothing which can be very hard for me to do. Silence in the Presence of God.

What an inspiring thread! I find the post communion meditation to be the most powerful time of the mass for me. It is the time I’m closest to Jesus. I usually do a personal prayer during this time asking Jesus to fill all parts of me, to allow me to carry Him to my family and everyone I know, particularly those who cannot be in communion with Him as I am at that moment. I ask Him to fill me and make me a better mother, wife, daughter, worker driver, Christian, citizen, friend, sister, giver, etc. (and I meditate on bringing Jesus through me in the holy communion to as many roles and people as I can think of during that time).

Balthasar I love you version.

Sometimes like last week I apoligize for saying AMEN to loud. It just flew out last week and all the heads turned. I did not mean to be disruptive.
