Altogether I’m more confused than when I began.

Okay.
An act of Imperfect Contrition motivates someone to go to Confession primarily (not necessarily only) because of fear of going to Hell.
An act of Perfect Contrition motivates someone to go to Confession primarily (not necessarily only) out of love for God and sorrow for having offended him.
