Yesterday I was as surprised as anyone at the election of Cardinal Bergoglio as the successor of Peter.

I consider myself a traditionalist and have a deep love for the Extraordinary Form. My wife and I were married in the EF, we attend Mass every Sunday in the EF and are grateful to Pope Benedict XVI for Summorum Ponttificum.

If I had chosen the Pope - Cardinal Bergoglio would not have been my first choice. Despite that since his appearance at the balcony of St. Peter’s I have been overcome with love for Pope Francis.

Is it a case of, as Blessed John Henry Newman put it, “heart speaks unto heart”?

I trust in the holy spirit to protect the Chuch from error in matters of faith and morals. I hope we have the Pope we NEED rather than the Pope we want.

Well, I have known the guy for less than 24 hours. But, from what I have experienced I am overjoyed by the selection. Just further proof that the Holy Spirit is at work in that process!

I am very excited for what the future holds for the Church!!!

The Catholic world has been praying so hard for the Lord to bless us with a pope who speaks to us.

I have not been too keen in having an American pope. Then I read a remark by Cardinal Sean O’Malley of Boston that he would keep his Franciscan habit and shoes. I thought about it…and then getting ready for work yesterday morning it came to me we need a Francis… a real contradiction against the world whose spirit overpowers everybody and everything…a tsunami as Cardinal Wuerl called it.

Then there is the prosperity gospel working in South America. Prior, due to a false form of liberation theology, people were exhorted to come out of themselves and work with their hands…but no mention of the working of Christ’s grace to come to us where we are now. They work and work but still are poor.

So the evangelicals are raking in many non-catechized Catholics that in their faith, God will take care of them, just go to this quote or that quote…

When it wasn’t Cardinal O’Malley, I was a bit disappointed. But considering the plight of South American Catholics, when it was announced our pope came from there, my spirits lifted. However – when he picked the name, ‘Francis’…I was overjoyed.

Francis is the solution to the Church problems.

And already Pope Francis is taking Francis’ lead by preaching through actions first. He checked into the motel himself, he took the bus along with other cardinals, refusing the papal car, and he immediately visited a nearby church of St. Mary Major, bringing in to her a bouquet of roses.

He is drawing together…maintaining the Domenican papal habit, the Franciscan name, Francis as a former Jesuit superior, drawing on the charisms of three very strong and fruitful orders.

It was so wonderful to see the universality of our faith among so many kinds of people at St. Peter’s Square. It was uplifting to hear CNN out of the USA speak so well of the Church and treat our faith with dignity and respect.

Likewise I hope the European Catholics and fallen away will recall the witness of devout American Roman Catholics on the square who are just as faithful to the Holy Father and our deposit of faith without compromise.

Yes, I am most thankful for Pope Francis. And about the time of his election, an cloud appeared in Florida as if in the form of a praising angel. I pray we follow in our Pope’s footsteps and be most obedient to his decrees because the Holy Father holds the keys to the Blood of Christ. Be not afraid!!!

I also. Everything I am learning about him has just deepened my appreciation and love. God works in mysterious ways and I do think we have the Pope we NEED. :gopray2:
 
My priest was in Rome on sabbatical when the pope resigned, he’s still there. It’s cool that he was able to watch it all happen!
 
I love him already; his humility and humbleness when asking for the people to pray for him is absolutely beautiful. 🙂 God bless Pope Francis!

Lord, we thank you for granting our church a new sheperd. Please grant him wisdom and courage to do your work, and give him guidance in the execution of the duties of his sacred office. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.
 
I have heard great things about him, most recently from Cardinal Dolan. He seems a very humble man who seems like he will not allow the papacy to change who he is. He appears to see himself just as everyone else, a servant to God and I think thats where he needs to be. He looks to others before himself, I have noticed on biographies he is very strong on poverty and inequalities in this world.

I think he will make a great Pope in the eyes of the Lord.
 
Just watched his first Mass as Pope. He can sing too! I love him.

That’s a great way to look at it. 👍

It was hard not to pick favorites when following the whole thing so closely. Cardinal Bergoglio wasn’t on my radar screen at all. But I am certainly glad it wasn’t up to me and I have confidence that he is going to be a special kind of pope.

It is a bit weird for me personally because I grew up knowing no pope but John Paul II. When Benedict XVI was elected, I was already very familiar with him and had read several of his books. This time around, I feel at a disadvantage having a pope I don’t know at all. But I look forward to getting to know more about him. I like what I have seen so far.

The same with me on all counts. And of course I love the Pope… he’s the Pope!

I am thrilled with our new pope! 😃 I must admit, however, I would have been happy with whoever the Holy Spirit had choosen!

I hope and pray Pope Francis can help bring back the many, many lukewarm catholics back to full union with the church.
 
Pretty much summed up the message today, Jesus Christ Crucified. Simple and straight from the heart. Have to love it. Yup the public revelation remains. Honestly I would think the profound change came. Pope Francis, Latin American and Jesuit, love it, love it, and love it. May the Lord be forever Blessed.
