Not seeking medical advice! Just asking for your experience!

I know it’s normal for that glorious mane that grew during pregnancy to start falling out when baby is 3-4 months old. But how long does it last? Did I really grow that much extra hair? LOL

It’s been coming out in handfuls for at least a month now. I’m tired of hair clogging the drain, hair all over the pillows, hair all over the baby, hair all over the baby’s diaper area.

Please tell me this stops! Or do I have to get pregnant again?

It does stop eventually.

I am right there with you- again. And sick of pulling out a handful every time i touch my hair. Blech.

I think mine went back to normal more when I started my cycles again and my hormones were normal. That was around 7 1/2 - 11 months pp the last two times.

I had the same problem after all 3 kids, and will probably have it happen again after I have this baby. I tried everything. Keeping my hair up, brushing 3 times a day. I had hair EVERYWHERE! It clogged the vacuum! It clogged the drain! I couldn’t cook anything without getting hair in it. My kids took to calling it “Mom’s Secret Spice.”

It slowed down for me at about 6-8 months postpartem. I hope this helps!

Hi, you actually didn’t grow more hair, during pregnancy hormones slow down the natural shedding, and I think that pre-natal vitamins help the hair look fuller and healthier.

When you lose hair after birth, you aren’t going bald, just that the extra hair that didn’t shed are shedding now.

Thanks for the words of encouragement, ladies! I especially appreciated the “Mom’s Secret Recipe” comment. 😉

Mary Gail, that is very interesting. I had no idea. I used to be a fairly regular shedder before pregnancy, so no wonder it’s coming out in droves now!

One thing to consider though, is postpartum hypothyroidism. Some women develop Hashimoto’s thyroiditis triggered by pregnancy, and can make your hair fall out, dry skin, increased somnolence, etc. Happened to my wife, after our last one was born. If you think this may be happening, especially if thyroid disease or other autoimmune disease runs in the family, consider checking with your doctor on next visit.

I didn’t get a thick lucious mane during pregnancy. In fact, pregnancy made my hair thinner, drab and greasy. And now it’s falling out in handfuls. And it’s going grey quickly.

I used to have such nice hair! :crying: :crying: :crying:

I had no idea this happened. Maybe that’s why I’m losing so much hair now  It began after my d&c  and the same thing happened after I lost Julian… I had no clue what was going on.

yessi,
Stress also makes it fall out. I ended up with Wilson syndrome after we lost two of our children. It is a thyroid problem brought on my stress. It will make your hair fall out along with making you feel like your loosing your mind.

I thought about the stress too… well, my TSH is being checked as test to find out about my losses, so if it comes back abnormal it might be a medical reason for me too.

I’m right there with you, girlfriend. It’s starting to slow down but I was starting to wonder if I was going bald. Prenatal vitamins help.

If it gets really bad I suggest going to the doctor to get your thyroid levels checked.
My hair loss was REALLY bad after my first child… so bad that I had enormous bald spots on my head! I had to comb over my hair just to hide the baldness… it was so horrible. :o
I found out that I tend to get postpartum hyperthyroidism… which, thankfully naturally went away without having to destroy my thyroid with radiation. My dermatologist was able to help with steroid creams for the hair loss. When the new hair started growing in I got a cute little pixie cut and just went with it… 5 years later it’s finally grown out to my desired longer length…

I had quite a problem after dd was born with hair loss. I also had ppd and a MAJOR hormone imbalance. My suggestion is to have your OB run estrogen/progesterone tests and see if that is causing a problem.

Seriously, I called 3 salons and told them what was going on… one said they wouldn’t even look at my hair, one said Sure they could fix it and the 3rd asked me to come in for a consult and then we would be able to decide what to do. I lost about 1/3 of my hair and when it grew back it was about an inch long and standing straight up… it was horrible!!! I chose the 3rd… Anyway, after I got put on ABC pills for the hormone imbalance my hair grew back, and I got over ppd.

I have one piece of advice…this is NOT the time to change hair stylists! I made the mistake of getting a cheap haircut 6 mos PP and she butchered me and made my hair look even worse!

My DH cut my hair after that and he did a pretty good job 🙂

My hair fell out 3-7 months PP and it fell out a bit again around 11 months while weaning baby down to one feeding a day.

I look at my daughter’s baptism photos and gasp when I see my bad haircut

My hair is still growing back. I have baby hairs everywhere and I have to tame them after blowdrying. I am now 14 months PP.
