Post your favorite scripture verse and why

Matt 25:40 (I’m paraphrasing) “Whatever you do to the least of my brethen, you do also to me.”

It’s a nice reminder not to so quickly overlook the homeless man on the street corner or not to shun someone who’s not as attractive, wealthy, able-bodied as you. (not YOU, but the collective you). I think we tend to view ourselves as the center of the universe. Some people only associate with those who look, dress, think, act just like THEMSELVES and judge everyone around them by their own standards. It’s one thing to ‘avoid bad company’…people who reject Christ’s teachings on morality. But it’s quite another to add our own standards to that. For example, the Church teaches modesty in dress. Some people add their own version and perceive that to be, “we must always wear skirts and whoever doesn’t always wear a skirt is a heathen and far below my own holiness.” Does that make sense? Anyway, I like Matt 25:40 because we’re to try to see Christ’s face in everyone…the biker, the homeless man, the woman in jeans (gasp!!) the handicapped. It’s not just all ‘show’…we need to be sincere.

…and yes, I need this reminder like everyone else…Jesus loves the ones who pump things up and act like snobs, too. That’s a toughie to remember but we can only try!!

Lately, my favorite has been Psalm 109 verse 8.

(NAB) May his days be few, may another take his office.

That has been what I have been holding onto lately when I get discouraged with the politics that are going on. (BTW, I am not hoping for death, but that his days in office (or in some cases her days) be few and that someone who values life from conception to natural death take their places.

As of today:

Eze 37: 14 And shall my spirit in you, and MAKE you walk in my statutes, and you will keep my judgments, and do them.

I like it because it reminds of the second Eucharistic prayer when it says: Make us grow in love. This comes from St. Paul who wrote similar truths.

He is going to MAKE us love Him, wow!

(Mat 11:28-30 Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.

These words strike me as almost a plea. It’s like Jesus saying please believe what I’m saying, please come to me. It makes me contemplate a God who is humble and lowly in heart. This scripture comes across to me as as the sorrow of one seeking friendship with so many not accepting the Lord’s great generosity. What unbelievable tenderness the Lord displays in this passage of scripture. May the Lord and His Spirit be my soul’s most welcome guest. Glory be to the everlasting Father.
