In answer to a prayer discerning my vocation–I asked God if I should go “into the desert” of the monastery. This was the first reading at mass that day. God is awesome!

I like these verses. I was going through a difficult time in my life and a friend of mine suggested these verses for me.

Mat 6:25 "Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing?
Mat 6:26 Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. The hired hand is not the shepherd who owns the sheep. So when he sees the wolf coming, he abandons the sheep and runs away. Then the wolf attacks the flock and scatters it. The man runs away because he is a hired hand and cares nothing for the sheep.

I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me—just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. I have other sheep that are not of this sheep pen. I must bring them also. They too will listen to my voice, and there shall be one flock and one shepherd. The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father.

I get a lump in my throat everytime I read this passage. I read the Epistle at the Easter Vigil Mass a couple of years ago, and it took everything in me not to start crying.

GALATIANS 3:13-14 & 29: Christ has redeemed us from the curse of the law, having become a curse for us (for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who hangs on a tree. 14 that the blessing of Abraham might come upon the Gentiles in Christ Jesus, that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 29 And if you are Christ’s, then you are Abraham’s seed, and heirs according to the promise.

Commentary: The curse is clearly listed in Leviticus 26 and Deuteronomy 28 as end as being … “poverty, disease and destruction”.

The Blessings of Abraham are also listed in these chapters as … “health, prosperity and success”.

This means that Christ gave us the RIGHT to these Blessings and we do NOT have to take vows of poverty or view disease as a “blessing” from God. It’s always good to see what the Word says about something, right?

Has it ever occurred to you that Jesus and His Apostles did not go around demanding their rights?

No one HAS to take vows of poverty. Some people do because they want to become more like Jesus, living as He lived when He was on the earth.

Scripture says that we are to give thanks in all circumstances, and that includes poverty and sickness.

Phil 4:10-13
11 Not that I complain of want; for I have learned, in whatever state I am, to be content. 12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound; in any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of facing plenty and hunger, abundance and want. 13 I can do all things in him who strengthens me.

Jesus just did what he thought was right.
He included women when women were not allowed to even talk with any male outside those in their household, on pain of death.

He made Mary the Apostle to the Apostle with the hope of the ressurrections first good news.
May we be so brave and be so balanced and Christlike.

The other descriptions of God I’ve found, seem to be from The GodHead and most devoted Prophets from OT and New Covenant.
New Covenant being the last of the five Covenants God has made with the Israelites who became Follows of The Way is:
“God is not a god of partiality.” And that’s what Our Pastorial Constitution also tells us, in many ways, but one specifically is Article 29, from Vatican II.
Why John Paul I was gotton rid of,
“It is not God’s Will that there be any more discrimination in the Church, because of race, sex…”

Jesus was NEVER poor … and it’s not necessary to be poor to gain favor from God, based on the following:

1. When Jesus was born … 3 rich men brought Him gold “from their treasures”. So the INSTANT He was born, Christ was very wealthy … and his parents benefitted from this also.
2. As an adult, Jesus lived in property at CAPERNAUM, the THRIVING AND WEALTHY lake-front community, not like the slums of Nazareth.
3. Jesus was a Carpenter. In those days there was no Home Depot, so Carpenters were in great demand !
4. Knowing He was the Son of God from the age of 12, no doubt He would have spent His money wisely to prepare for Ministry at age 30. Unless we dare to say He was irresponsible with His income.
5. When He entered full time ministry, He supported 12 disciples 24/7 - food, clothing, shelter - and never needed or wanted for anything.
6. We also don’t have to live in poverty cause poverty cannot further the Gospel “all over the world”. Fuel costs money, Bibles cost money, missionary work costs money. What should we pay it with?
7. Money is NOT the root of all evil … the scripture says “the love of it” … or the obession and LUST of it.
8. Christ called Heaven down to earth in the Lord’s Prayer. And there is no poverty or disease in Heaven, thus we have no use for these things either here on Earth.

Proverbs 10:22: The blessing of the Lord makes us rich and He adds no sorrow with it.

He was always poor. He didn’t have lake front property. He subsisted off of the generosity of others. Read Matthew 8:20

And Jesus saith to him: The foxes have holes, and the birds of the air nests; but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head.

I also wonder why every person that asked to follow Him was first told to sell everything they had and give it to the poor.
