Hey Guys,
My sister is currently dating a man who told her he received an annulment in the church a few years ago. However, recently my sister learned that the church her boyfriend is part of church that is not in communion with the church, and does not believe we currently even have a pope. I am not sure what process he went through to get his annulment in his branch of “Catholicism”.

He is now going to a church with my sister which fully recognizes the pope. However, if the two them were to ever get married, could his annulment in another church complicate a catholic wedding? I’m not entirely sure how church marriage law works, and I am a little concerned.

Thank you!

They need to discuss this with her Pastor ASAP (might be difficult to get an appointment during Advent, maybe after the holidays).

The Chancery office at the Diocese will have the record of his decree of nullity as will his baptismal parish. He can get copies from them.

If he does not have a decree of nullity from the Catholic Church, then he does not have a decree of nullity, period.

He would need to pursue a decree of nullity through the Catholic Church. There are many factors here, including whether or not he was baptized into this other sect or if he were baptized Catholic and later joined this schismatic/heretical group. Lots of things depend upon specifics.

So the first step is to lay out all the facts with the parish priest and then start the nullity process.
