Potentially Toxic Job Opportunity

Hello, Brother and Sisters.

I am currently out of work, and the only opportunity I have in front of me is one that appears to be a very toxic and abusive and environment (according to numerous credible people who have quit).

I’m willing to do whatever I have to do to work, but I fear that this could take a big toll on me and my family.

Could you please pray that the Lord helps me to make the right decision about this, or leads me to something else less toxic?

The very fact that you’re doubting about the job shows that you are uneasy about it; perhaps it’s the Holy Spirit warning you that some caution should be taken. I spoke to a friend who was in a similar situation a few days ago, and my advice to him was that if it wasn’t worth it if ultimately jeopardized his soul. He texted me the following day and told me he left.

I myself had this dilemma of choosing to work at a payday loan place, but I chose NO because it put me at risk for usury and working for loan sharks.

You cannot put a price on your soul. For what will it profit a man to gain the whole world but forfeit eternal life/his soul? (see Mark 8:36)

Pray for better employment opportunities, God never leaves those He loves empty handed.

Matthew 6:33 “But strive first for the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Pray to Saint Joseph for better employment opportunities.

You are the patron of families; do not let those who have children to support and raise lack the necessary means. Have pity on our brothers and sisters held down in unemployment and poverty because of sickness or social disorders. Help our political leaders and captains of industry find new and just solutions. May each and every one have the joy of contributing, according to his abilities, to the common prosperity by an honorable livelihood. Grant that we may all share together in the abundant goods God has given us and that we may help underprivileged countries. Amen.

Is it a negative atmosphere or is it immoral and borderline illegal?

I ask because it’s quite possible that if you do take the position, while you may not like it, the position COULD POTENTIALLY lead you someplace else. You could meet somebody there that likes your work style, and that person could lead you to something that you are much more qualified for.

Last year I was working in a decent enough work environment, but I got fired because I simply was not good at the job. While I found this personally demoralizing, it did spur me on to find something else within a few weeks that I didn’t really necessarily want either, because it was a temporary position only for two months out of the summer. However I DID excel at that job and got some good references out of it to balance out the termination at the one before. My wife pointed out to me that even though it was demoralizing to have been terminated, the job itself didn’t pay much or offer any benefits, and if I hadn’t been fired then I never would have looked into the other one that I DID excel at, because it was for the summertime only.

FYI—I now have a job that i enjoy going to, although the conditions are not perfect, but what job is? Nonetheless, I am biding my time. Everyday when i go into work (especially the days when the long commute really gets on my nerves), I tell myself that THIS is where God wants me to be for the current period, and when something better comes along, then I’ll go with that. In the meantime, I do like my current job and bosses and co-workers.

To clarify, I would not say that the nature of the business is inherently immoral. It’s just that the person at the top is a bully and a manipulator, so that culture trickles down throughout the ranks. Even people who are otherwise “good people” tend to become corrupted after being there a while, and will back stab other employees just to get the attention off of themselves. It’s pretty sick, and there is no way I could go there expecting to change anything (doing so would be as unhealthy as a girl who dates an abusive guy in the hopes that she can reform him).

So that’s my situation. Not great, but I don’t have any other options. Again, I appreciate your prayers, and will offer a Hail Mary as thanks for everyone who responds.
 
Praying you have a great job by now. . . . Prayer of apology and thanksgiving . . . because of forgetfulness to say “thank You” to Our Lord for all the blessings He pours on us and we do not even realize it. In addition, the thread could be closed if only a couple of people post on it and I want to get the “thank You” in. 😃

Thank you Luz Maria, it was great to read those words. I too am having job trouble: I am miserable there & completely reevaluating my direction. It. caused me so much stress I got sick. I would love to have a job I enjoyed.

Actually I have mostly not had jobs I enjoyed: only an endurance. Is life too short for that?

I am praying for you and will offer this bit of wisdom -

The job may not be what you want - long term … but short term it provides necessary income to cover living expenses … And this is more true than not …

"It is easier to find a job while employed than it is when one is unemployed."

If you can accept this position - perhaps you should pray on it - and make a decision - Yes or No …

If you accept it - be as diligent as possible being a good employee … show up on time, work hard, don’t get drug into the politics … **and keep looking for that position that you ultimately desire …

I have worked for the private sector, public sector and even started a company from scratch and grew it into a small firm with employees …

There are pluses and minuses in every position, things that happen, customers, co-workers, suppliers, supervisors … most are good people, a few make life hard … in 40 years of working - A truly toxic work place was non-existent … there were a few toxic individuals here and there … if you know who and what to watch out for - you can avoid them …
