Practical skirts

If I’m not in jeans, I’m in a skirt. I love love love long flowy skirts. J Jill is my store of choice–I get all my clothes there. Beautiful clothes, stylish, conservative, practical, last forever, and if you shop the sales, wonderfully priced.

Well now… here is my issue (cause it always seems like there is one)

Once I purchase said skirts… what do I do to not look like a SDA or end up making myself look matronly?
I am only 23, and I enjoy my age. I am afraid that as I begin to don longer skirts, because of the colder weather, I will be aging myself with my wardrobe. I already have quite the issue because I am short, have a mommy body, and am very busty. So misses size don’t usually fit.
sigh

I saw some young LDS ladies the other day and they looked lovely! But when I try to look as they did, I come off frumpy.
Ideas?
 
Keep shopping around. There are definitely styles of skirts that are modest but are dowdy. I don’t think the two need to go hand in hand. I’ve got some really cute dressy skirts that are almost ankle length that I love, but haven’t found more casual long skirts that I like yet.

I’m so glad you don’t want to look frumpy 🙂

I see so many women in frumpy (usually denim, sorry ladies!) skirts and jumpers and I sometimes wonder if their husbands like the look. I know mine wouldn’t. —KCT

I did find a few denim skirts that did look lovely on me, even the denim ones. But what do I do on top? I am currently wearing t-shirts/polos with a camis underneath to aid in modesty… but… sigh why is modesty and the celebration of femininity so difficult!!!

Have you tried Coldwater Creek? They have fabulous jackets and other tops, as well as great long skirts. Their stuff is kind of expensive, but it’s good quality, so a piece or two here and there is really a good investment. The clearance section is usually good, too.

Regarding wearing skirts in cold weather… I just noticed in Target the other day a whole assortment of leg warmers in all kinds of fun colors. I bought a few pairs and will probably be making a few, too. I never thought they would come back in style. Go 80s! 👍
 
Ladies back in the old days use to wear skirt when they did anything and everything. It’s not that hard to do! Besides there are cute and comforable skirt now a days. You just have to look for places that carry nice skirts. Demin skirts are great, they good for everything. I buy my skirts at www.sierrabrooke.com under Brooke’s Closet. It’s gently used modest clothes for a AFFORDABLE price. Why buy new when gently used is sooo much cheaper and still nice with lots of wear. You know what I mean…
 
For wearing UNDER skirts, where can I buy womens’ sizes of those really thick, really warm, cotton or mostly cotton tights? My little girls have them, but all I can find in ladies’ sizes are thin nylon pantyhose, not warm enough at all. 😦

I found some at Kohl’s last year. I haven’t looked this year, but sometimes you can find leggings at Wal-Mart with the long underwear. I think Penney’s and Sears sell “Cuddle Duds” which are similar.
 
Not skirts only, but I do love them!
I’m more into the peasant/hippy look, you know, floor length,
bright, fun patterns, swishy and swirly.
This kind is not so heavy duty though, so if I were to be working
outside, or major cleaning (floor/tubs, ect) I’d probably use a denim skirt for that, more durable and tear resistant.

I get most of mine at Roamans and Woman Within, online.
Their clearance is superb! I now have two new peasant skirts, one in pink print, the other in green, for only $2.88 each.
Ordered an eyelet crinkle skirt last night, lemon yellow (so cheery) for a/b $10. Check them out, they offer denim, too, and in colors!

For winter wear, a heavier cotton, or denim/wool/knit/flannel skirt is best, paired with heavy tights, leggings, legwarmers, or long johns. Try cuddlduds.com for some really nice ones!

I shave mine every day. It takes like all of a minute in the shower. You might be surprised how not skipping over little things like that actually add up to just make you feel better all day. Not saying ewww it’s gross to not shave your legs or anything, but (it is, and ) I do think it is important to not overlook the small things you can do for yourself (not to mention your poor husband!) each day to feel good.

I’ve been pairing up my skirts (daily wearing) with some tops that I got at Old Navy. They are knit T-Shirt material, I got them big enough to wear some of my tight short sleeves under them, contrasting colors and you are in style!

My problem is shoes!!!

I can’t figure out what kind of shoes to wear with my casual skirts without looking "menonite*…sorry, but we have so many around here, they wear Tennis Shoes with their skirts and I just am not doing that!

I wore flip flops all summer, but I don’t know what kind of shoes to get…I want comfort…I don’t want knee boots to wear every day (I have big calves)…

Ankle boots are quite in fashion, and you won’t have the calf issues. 🙂
One of the sites above, Raemons and Woman Within have “plus size” boots for those of us with big calves. Take a look there. They were a little on the expensive side, but they were leather.

I’ll let you know about them, when I get them…but my Mom just ordered me a pair of suede brown boots, with…get this…cable knit on the the top…like leg warmers.

Neat looking, boots about to the ankle, the rest is like a sweater, I really hope they will look neat with skirts.

But I’m really concerned with something warm to where everyday…maybe clogs? with Tights? I don’t know…I’m researching because I’m new to the want to wear skirts more scene, LOL…I’m really trying to become more modest…

I had a friend who wore skirts from Gypsy Rose all the time. She wore crocs with them. Course, she was her and she got away with it (if that makes sense… lol) I , personally, love crocs and wear them with funky tow socks. But I am also 23 and kinda kooky anyway (wiggles fingers that’s kooooooky!)
They make a winter shoe (mammoth) that has a warm fuzzy lining and the shoes are waterproof (apparently, the holes on this pair are just for fun) I must email them and find out if I can use the liner with my Alice shoes. If not- Wool socks for me! 😃

I am slowly switching to skirts because they are more feminine. I love love love long blue jean skirts. All my skirts come to my ankles. I also feel a call to be more modest so I won’t wear a skirt with an slit past the calf area. If you shop around, you can find some very cute long skirts.
 
I agree, skirts are more comfortable than regular jeans. I am currently expecting, so I’ve been wearing some stretch fine wale cord pants, that don’t make that annoying “scritch” sound. For skirts, I wear mid calf to ankle length, even though I’m 5’ 3". My favorite is an elastic waist ankle length cotton floral (black background with all sorts of little flowers) with hidden side pockets. I like to pair skirts with a slightly shaped button up shirt, and a camisol underneat just in case it gaps. Of course stretch and one size larger solves that problem. I especially love the new empire waist style of blouses that give shape without looking frumpy or immodest. I also dislike nylons, so I wear leggings for warmth with a nylon slip so my skirt doesn’t stick to my legs. For shoes I pair them with some clogs or fisherman style closed toe leather shoes I have. Ballet flats seem to be the style now, but would look best with a just below knee length skirt. Hanna Anderson has womens size tights, but are about 12$ a pair I think. I love corduroy and might look into getting one this season to fit my expanding belly and still make me look slim. Jumpers seem to look frumpy on me, so I only wear them for around the house. I’d love some fancy looking waterproof boots too, so send me any links that are not too expensively priced. Uggs are warm, but clunky (my mom has a pair that I tried on once).
