Practicing Catholics Only, Please: Mary Worship

I agree with both Malachi and Pax. We have allowed the Protestant definition of “worship” as in Divine Worship to intrude on and overtake the original meaning of worship, which was simply to reverence. Malachi refers to the use of “Your Worship” as a title for some judges in England (and incidentally here in Australia). What is interesting about this title is that it was used principally for Justices of the Peace and Magistrates, that is for those on the lower rungs of the Judicial system. Likewise in Gilbert and Sullivan’s Mikado there is a line “with a passion that’s intense I worship and adore” referring to a loved one not God. I have no problem saying I worship Our Lady but I would most definitely say that I do not consider her divine. This question is really just an attempt to prove that Catholics are idolators by using “worship” in a narrowly specific way to imply that we treat Mary as God. I just won’t buy in to it. Of course if the person asking is genuinely seeking the truth then I will explain what we believe about Our Lady in a way they will understand but for those seeking ammunition then it is better to be up front and disarm them first, lest in accepting their term we find ourselves trapped later on.
 
I, as a Catholic, do not worship Mary. I honor her.

It is biblical to honor and venerate Mary as well as other saints…

Phil.2:29 “…and be sure to honor people like him.”

Speaking of Mary today we celebrate a Memorial for “Our Lady of Sorrows”

Seven Sorrows of Mary:
at the prophecy of Simeon;
at the flight into Egypt;
having lost the Holy Child at Jerusalem; meeting Jesus on his way to Calvary; standing at the foot of the Cross; Jesus being taken from the Cross; at the burial of Christ.

I don’t “worship” Mary. But I do hold her in very high regard. I admire her very much, I want to be like her, and I thank her and bless her for her generosity in saying “Yes” to the Angel, and making herself an Ark for Jesus so that He could come to us and save us from our sins.

I know that she probably had plans of her own for her life, and I thank her for giving up her own plans to make way for the Saviour of the World. I wish I knew how to be that generous with my own time.
 
I do not worship our Blessed Mother but I hold her in high esteem. Growing up, I was surrounded by older ladies who did indeed worship Mary (as well as a few saints) above Jesus. I think it was because of their culture. These people also had a highly supersticious form of Catholism. My mom and I had had a few arguements because she was raised to believe that a statue of Mary was really her. I once said to her I would break the statue to prove to her it wasn’t an entity (I would do it not to disrespect the memory of our BM but to show it was an object made of plastic). Anyway, my mom freaked out saying she would be cursed and have bad luck so I didn’t dare try.
 
Any Catholic who worships Mary is terribly misinformed. Either they were poorly taught or have become heretics.

Mary is venerated not worshiped.

What exactly does “worship” entail? At what point does honour/respect become worship?

Is it the acknowledgement that the character in question is divine?

Practicing Catholic here! In fact, this Sunday, 9/17/06, I and about 30 other men will be installed in our diocese by the Bishop as Acolytes. (That’s one step under a deacon for all of those who do not know.) I am a convert from a Protestant background- fundamentalist. Catholics DO NOT worship Mary or any other being other than God almighty as he is in the Trinity. Anyone who worships anything else but God the almighty is an idolator and is breaking commandment #1 and #2. Any Catholic who worships Mary or anything else other than the Almighty God is not following the teachings of the Church. Mary is our mother, and as the commandments say, honor thy mother and father. We honor her as Jesus did- and he honored her perfectly I might add since he kept the commandments perfectly. But true Godly worship is reserved for the Father, the SOn, and The Holy Spirit. :yup:
 
I think you need to define “worship” when you ask your question. It depends on if you are using the traditional definition of “worship,” which simply means “to give honor/respect to,” or if you are using today’s connotation of “worship,” which has a limited scope, implying only “worship as God,” which we would call “adoration” or “latria”. The honor/respect we give to fellow humans is called “dulia”. In this field, Mary is set apart (because of her special role/participation in God’s plan of salvation). The honor/respect we give to Mary is called hyper-dulia. This is a far cry from the latria that is due to God alone.

Worship as the word is used today no way. I do not know anyone who does.

No, I don’t worship Mary. Nor would Mary want me to. Jesus alone is worthy of worship.
 
Let’s get real for a moment…the yes votes will be from Protestants who seek to make us look bad.
