Practicing Jews on this Forum: Have you read "Surprised by Christ: My Journey from Judaism to Orthodox Christianity" by Fr. James Bernstein?

The Author: Fr. James Bernstein is a son of a Jewish Rabbi.

If any practicing Jews here have read the book, I’d like to know your thoughts on it.

I haven’t read it myself, but am curious if it would be a good book to get a Jewish friend of mine.

I’d like the option of practicing Jews on the book.

It’s me. You are not mistaken. I had associated myself with the Catholic Chuch for about the last year - according to Catholic Code of Canon Law 844.3 Eastern Orthodox Christians “Not in Communion” with Rome may receive the Sacraments validly in the Catholic Church; however, recently I’ve undergone a powerful reversion to the Orthodox Faith.

I don’t want to get this thread off topic though.

I have a Jewish friend who began exploring Holy Orthodoxy one year ago. This book was part of his journey. He said it is excellent! He was baptized into the Russian Orthodox Synodal Church (ROCOR) in late September 2009.

Do you know if he read the book and then began an interest or if he already had the interest and then read the book?

Okay - that’s too bad that they’re not that many of you left.

Does the title cause you any interest at all in reading it? How would you feel if someone you know gave you the book? Would it interest you or make you upset or what?

BTW - I love the picture you have of that bunny. I remember it from my childhood. What’s the name of it?

He and I had been having extensive discussions by phone for a few months. Then he flew out to visit me and my family and it was my spiritual father who recommended that he purchase and read that book.
 
Where did our Jews go?

I stay away for a few months and all my Jewish friends vanish? All but Kaninchen

After a decade and a half of internet discussion about religion, it’s rather difficult upset me! 🙂

I can imagine that it might upset people though - people who are not ‘in the market’ for a different religion (I’m not and have never been) but not used to the hurly-burly of the religious ‘marketplace’ might find it invasive. In the same way that a Christian might be offended by somebody gave him/her books by members of their religion who have converted to Islam.

chosenpeople is still around but he tends to restrict himself to certain sorts of threads/forums I think - bit like me really.

I don’t think that we’re more, shall we say, ‘accident prone’ (;)) than any other group.

I think Valke ‘fell’ during the Great Obama Wars.

LOL…wait, according to some in the American Media, he is more loved there than here.

Anyway, I have learned a lot about Judaism from the Jews on this forum, and I thank God for that.

He’s a ‘celebrity’ and Europeans love celebrities, he’d be even more loved if he turned up on a reality TV show.

I do think it’s a pity that there’s no ‘Valke-like’ poster around. Somebody who’s prepared to give the time and patience to questions people come up with. I used to do the ‘resident Jew’ role on boards years ago but it does take time and it does take patience.

I bet it does. I tend to be the resident Catholic a lot of times in real life, so to speak.

Actually, a book like that would really interest me. But that’s me.
