Are there books of prayers for the hours of the day? I have an Orthodox prayer book, divided into the hours. Does such a thing exist for Catholics? How does one develop a prayer rule? How much of your prayer is extermporaneous, ect.

thanks for any info

Yes, Catholics have prayer like that, called the Liturgy of the Hours/Divine Office. It comes in 4 bound volumes. I use Magnificat, which is published monthly and contains the morning, evening and night prayers as well as meditations from various spiritual authors. It has enriched my prayer life tremendously!

There are some set prayers (actually a lot of set prayers) but I would not call them “rules”. My prayers are about 75-25, a lot I make up on my own, but it could just as easily be 90-10 in either direction. No one says you have to use set prayers or not.

And if someone says a prayer a bit different from the norm there is no penalty for that. This is not like some magic spell or incantation. God hears us even when we mumble or whisper or pray silently or aloud.

I find set prayers a bit more convenient and easier than coming up with words for my own. But if I feel a bit less hurried or more relaxed, a quiet conversation, or just meditation works just find for me.

Catholics have The Litergy Of The Hours.

I only do Compline at the moment:

Most of my prayers are set prayers. This may, probably will, change in the future. But at this stage in my life I like the concept of the Rosary. Spoken set prayers combined with meditation.

Most laypeople who want to pray the Divine Office pray either Lauds or Vespers (or both) since they are more important.

Or the little Office of the Blessed Virgin.

Yes, since Vatican II, the hours are:

Matins (Office of Readings)
Lauds (Morning Prayer)

Terce (Prayer During the Day - optional to pray any 1 or all 3)
Sext
None

Vespers (Evening Prayer)
Compline (Night Prayer)

Before Vatican II there was Prime/Vigils before Lauds.

I think that the Little Offices of the Blessed Virgin are no longer officialy used.

The little office of the Blessed Virgin still exists at least in some orders and also for the use of laymen.

I suppose that today some are more interested in Echo-spirituality than the Little Office.😦
