Does anybody know of a “Praise and Worship” type of service offered by a Catholic parish or even a lay Catholic group or apostolate?

I know quite a bit of Catholics who have either left the Church or have one foot out the door because they have gone to a praise and worship service with an evangelical/non-denominational group and are awed by the preaching and/or audio/video.

If we are not competing in this arena, should we be? If we did compete here, at least those leaving the Church would have to think of a better excuse for leaving.

We have something called “Mass”.

Sorry, if people are not “entertained” enough by Catholic liturgy, then there is little anyone can do to stop them. Liturgy is not mere entertainment. Let the other ecclesial communities use light shows and praise bands and electrifying preachers to amp up their graceless services. We in the Catholic Church will still have Apostolic Succession and the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. And that is all we need.

Video and most audio in churches stinks. And, Catholics and Protestants alike have dumbed down horrifically even without these.

To worship God is to not stunt the growth of the ordinary fellow Christians. If you help them get their crown, you will have a share in it.

Several times I have expressed my desire for a non-liturgical service where people could worship using various genres of music that aren’t normally used in Mass. As it is, I get my “fix” at various shaped-note singings in the area.

Bingo!👍

Yes, around here several parishes have praise and worship services in addition to Mass. I have never been because it’s not my thing, but I have friends who enjoy it

There’s a lot more to Catholic worship than the Mass. Lots of parishes have Adoration chapels or Holy Hours, or vespers, or communal prayer of the rosary, for example. Having a prayer and worship service in addition to Mass is not wrong. We need the Mass, absolutely, but it’s a sign of a vibrant parish that there are other ways for the community to come together to honor and worship God.

Agree. with Pensmama.
Praise and Worship gatherings are not Masses, nor are they intended to be.
Our Archdiocese offers these for young people as prayer services for youth. They are lively at times, and reverent at times, often ending in an hour of Adoration with very soft music or silence. Hundreds attend.
Anyone who dismisses one as horrible has likely never been to one.
They are NOT Masses. They are more like evening retreats.

Having said this…the reason people leave the church is poor catechesis.
They simply don’t understand what the Mass IS.
