Speech and debate
Winston Church hill was a very good orator. With his stature as an old man and a Cuban Cigar always in his mouth, He made a good appearance. Churchill had 5 methods of giving a speech. He thought these couple methods offered a big help to any speech.
1.Begin strongly. Impress your audience with an opening zinger. That decidedly does not mean begin with a joke. Jokes sound tacked on, whether at the beginning or ending of your remarks, and that’s tacky.
Churchill was the leader of an entire superpower almost about to lose a war. Obviously he had to always appear strong and able to get Britian out of the falling bombs back onto the offence against Germany in World War II.
2.Focus on one theme. A speech is like a symphony. It can have three movements, but it must have one dominant melody. If not, then it’s not really a speech at all, just a report that you are reading out loud.
Here Churchill stressed that you can go off course during a speech. He is saying that you
can have different parts to a speech but it must flow.
3.Use simple language. Toss out the beat-around-the-bush jargon of bureaucrats and pick up your pace with personal, colorful language.
Using language that people understand is always useful. You can sound smart but no one will know what you mean, or your personal take on a subject or whatever your giving a speech on.
4.Draw a picture in the listener’s mind. Transform dry abstractions like “private enterprise” into a powerful picture like “the sturdy horse pulling along the cart of democracy,” as Sir Winston did.
With drawing a picture in a listeners mind you make a picture in there mind as if they are Watching a movie. Combining powerful images with words also gets your message across more clearly.
5.End with an emotion. Express feelings from the heart when you cap your speech.
Ending with a strong emotion would excite someone in so much emotion sometimes it doesn’t even matter if something small does not make since in your speech. Sometimes they will just be caught in so much passion they would instinctively support you. Also Churchill used many hand gestures and was always moving his arms and hands. Since 95% of a communication is from your appearance this makes much sense. From his fiery passion witnesses must have seen a hurricane when this man spoke.
There are two things that are more difficult than making an after-dinner speech: climbing a wall which is leaning toward you and kissing a girl who is leaning away from you.
The most challenging part of Churchill’s career, when giving speeches, was most likely when he had to hold a country together feeling the bombs of Germany. He is renowned for giving his country hope and having a fighting spirit through the war.
Success is the ability to go to one failure to another with no loss of enthusiasm.
This proves true in Churchill’s life. The first time he entered politics when trying to become a senator he failed. He was also a chief military person in parliament in World War I but was removed because of a very poor beach assault. In World War II he proved his worth though as a instigator to get a nation out of the dirt and pick its self up for a nasty long fight against the Germans.
