In our “fact-finding” mission, we discovered that our elderly family members (who have no children of their own) have moved into a very shabby but expensive assisted living home with nursing home attached in a remote area of Maine. They’ve made their own choices and they want to stay where they are. It’s a very sad situation. I pray that they are safe and well-cared for. All they have is each other. They are not religious at all. We’re lining up some better doctors for them and trying to improve their situation as much as we can.

If you can continue your visits with them. Keep an eye on their personal belongings, how clean their living quarters are, what the food is like. If someone can become their legal medical power of attorney see if they will do that. Believe me, from experience, even the best run assisted living situations have problems. Shabby and out of order places are never good.

Here are things to look for if you suspect abuse or just want to recognize when it might me happening: When you visit your family look at their arms and legs for excess bruising and for extreme use of long sleeves and sweaters. If everyone in the place is suddenly decked out in long sleeve sweaters see if you can detect bandages on arms and legs. If there are a lot of folks with bandages and skin tears be suspicious. Check for broken glasses, missing dentures anything like that can be a sign of someone mistreating people.

Also, check to see if folks are getting offered water or juice during the day. As your relatives make friends, you make friends too. That way you can watch several folks on the QT and make note of any thing that looks off. If the place stinks of urine and fecal matter be concerned that people are being left in their own messes too long, that bedding is not being changed etc.

I have taken care of many folks in these situations. There are usually little signs of trouble that people can miss if unaware of what to look for. The more interest you show in your relatives the less subject to abuse they will be. Go at different times of the day and night if you can. Take notes and keep a journal of your visits. It all makes a difference.

Prayer of the Elderly

Grant, O Lord of life,
That we may savor every season of our lives as a gift
filled with promise for the future.
Grant that we may lovingly accept your will,
and place ourselves each day in your merciful hands.
And when the moment of our definitive “passage” comes,
grant that we may face it with serenity,
without regret for what we shall leave behind.
For in meeting you,
after having sought you for so long,
we shall find once more every authentic good
which we have known here on earth,
in the company of all who have gone before us
marked with the sign of faith and hope.
Mary, Mother of pilgrim humanity,
pray for us “now and at the hour of our death.”
Keep us ever close to Jesus, your beloved Son and our brother,
the Lord of life and glory. Amen!
-Pope John Paul II

I’m definitely praying, and I will continue to. My Grandma ended up in a similar situation for the last few months of her life, and I think about it all the time. It’s one of those regrets I’ll carry with me forever, even though I was far too young do anything about it at the time. I really think Cricket2 offers some good advice.

Peace and all Good!

prayer to saint dominic
O Holy Priest of God and glorious Patriarch, St. Dominic, thou who wast the friend, the well-beloved son and confidant of the Queen of Heaven, and didst work so many miracles by the power of the Holy Rosary, have regard for my intercessions. On earth you opened your heart to the miseries of your fellow man, and your hands were strong to help them; now in heaven your charity has not grown less nor has your power waned.
Pray for me to the Mother of the Rosary and to her divine Son, for I have great confidence that through your assistance I shall obtain the favor I so much desire:abundant blessings of health safety, joy & peace for njlisa’s elderly relatives and that they may also come to know and accept the lLove & Joy of Our Divine Lord Jesus Christ Amen.

A NOVENA TO ST. DOMINIC
O renowned champion of the faith of Christ,
most holy saint Dominic, who didst renounce the honour and dignity
of an earthly principality to embrace the poor,
laborious, and mortified life
which should distinguish a disciple of Him Who has said:
“If any man will come after Me,
let him take up his cross and follow Me.”
O burning torch,
who being thyself consumed with the fire of divine love,
didst incessantly labour
to enkindle that sacred flame in the hearts of others,
look down upon me from that throne of glory
where thou enjoyest the reward of all thy labours,
and obtain that some sparks of that blessed fire
may be lighted in my soul,
to animate and encourage me under any crosses or trials
with which it shall please the divine goodness to visit me.
Thou, O great Saint,
regardest as nothing all the afflictions thou didst endure,
and all the toils thou didst undergo for the promotion of God’s holy cause;
obtain, I beseech Thee, that the same
ardent love which strengthened thee,
may make sweet to me labours, humiliations, disgraces,
or whatever other mortifications
I may have to suffer for the Name of Jesus.
May I ever bear in mind that nothing can happen to me
but by the particular dispensation of a God
Who is infinitely wise,
and therefore knows what is best for my welfare; infinitely powerful,
and consequently able to effect it;
and above all,
infinitely merciful and loving,
Who has laid down His life for my redemption,
and continues daily to give new proofs of His love and bounty.
O tender Father of the poor who,
when all other resources were exhausted,
didst offer thyself for their relief,
obtain for me that true spirit of compassion for the suffering members of Jesus Christ,
which shone forth so conspicuously in thy holy life.
May I, by charity to those whom Jesus so dearly loves,
lay up for myself treasures in heaven,
where thou now enjoyest that which the eye hath not seen,
nor the ear heard,
nor the heart of man conceived,
but which God has prepared for those who love Him,
and who prove themselves His Disciples
by the observance of His Divine precept - love one another.
I praise and thank God for the high degree of sanctity
to which He had raised thee,
and the special privileges
by which He has distinguished thee.
I conjure thee,
by that gratitude with which thou shalt for all eternity
be penetrated for thy Divine Benefactor,
implore for me the grace to root out of my heart
whatever is not agreeable in His sight, especially that evil habit
by which I most frequently offend Him.
Obtain likewise the favours I request in this Novena,
through thy powerful intercession.

abundant blessings of health safety, joy & peace for njlisa’s elderly relatives and that they may also come to know and accept the lLove & Joy of Our Divine Lord Jesus Christ

O glorious Mother of God,
Queen of the most sacred Rosary,
thou who didst love Dominic with the affection of a mother,
and were most tenderly loved and honoured by him,
look upon me, for his sake, with an eye of pity,
deign to join with him in presenting these petitions
to thy most Blessed Jesus.
I sincerely desire from this moment
to love Him with all my heart,
and serve Him with all my strength,
and now place myself under thy powerful protection,
as a sure means of obtaining all the graces necessary
to serve Him faithfully here,
that I may eternally rejoice with Him hereafter. Amen.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Dear Njlisa,

Feel for you! All you can do is trust in God and contact the organisers of the assisted living facility as often as possible to get updates on their wellbeing.

Will be praying hard for you and for your elderly relatives.
God bless you.

Thanks so much for your concern and prayers. As to your advice, just know that the entire family is working together. But Pat and Bill are a fiercely independent pair. They are not incompetent.

Pray for their health and Pat’s relief from pain. We’re working on our end to put together a plan for them.

Holy Michael the Archangel defend us in the day of battle.
Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host,
by the Power of God,
thrust down to hell satan and all the wicked spirits,
who wander through the world for the ruin of souls.
Amen.

Remember, O most loving Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone fled to your protection, implored your help, or sought your intercession and was left forsaken. Inspired by this confidence, I fly unto you, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To you I come, before you I stand, a sorrowful sinner. Despise not my words, O Mother of the Word, but in your mercy, hear and answer me.
Amen

Pray for my mother who lives in an assisted living and has early stages of dementia that she be safe and that she knows how much we love her.
I certainly understand your situation. My late mother suffered from dementia, and my father is suffering as well. God bless you and your mother and all who love her.

++++++++++++

O God of love,
hear our prayer
for all who suffer from Alzheimer’s.
In the days of changing memory,
be with them in their fears.
In the days when memory has gone,
bless their families who suffer.
Surround them with tender love
from family, friend, and stranger.
Grant them peace in their hearts,
a secure home environment,
and dignity in their lives.
May each day bring a blessing,
hope, and greater love.
Through Jesus Christ our Lord,
Amen.
