Please pray that God will guide me to the right purpose or calling in my life. I sense a strong desire to pray for the inmates in the many prisons in my state. I have contacted my church and the diocese but to little avail. I dont think a lot is being done to minister to those in prison here. I have been asking about being pen pals with some female prisoners so I can pray for them and share God’s love with them but like I said no one in the church seems to be responding. I guess it also would be a tricky ministry as I would have to be careful not to use my mailing address or real name? Any advice or prayers on this kind of ministry would be helpful. Thank you!

Dear Jesus and Blessed Mother, please help elohimrules to recognize and fulfill their true vocation. If that is prison ministry, please show the way, and if it is some other calling, please inspire and guide elohimrules to find it quickly and start working towards it expeditiously. In Jesus’ name we pray. Amen.

Prayer for vocation from USCCB
Gracious God,
You have called us, including elohimrules, to life,
and gifted us in many ways.
Through Baptism You have sent us
to continue the mission of Jesus
by sharing our love with others.
Strengthen us to respond to
Your call each day.
Help us to become all You desire of us.
Inspire us to make a difference in
others’ lives.
Lead us, especially elohimrules, to choose the way of life
You have planned for us.
Open the hearts of all to listen
to Your call.
Fill all with Your Holy Spirit that
we may have listening hearts and
the courage to respond to You.
Enkindle in our hearts and the hearts of others the desire
to make the world a better place
by serving as
Lay Minister, Sister, Priest,
Brother or Deacon, or prison minister, or in another way that You might wish us to serve
Amen.

(Some practical advice: As someone who has had some dealings in the past with prisons and the incarcerated, I think the best way to begin would be as a volunteer to help an established prison chaplain. You might want to check in the diocese containing the prison to see if there is a Catholic chaplain and if there is a volunteer program. I would really advise against just going and trying to contact people in prison without getting some training and pointers from people already involved in this ministry, in order to avoid getting in any trouble or even worse putting yourself at risk. There is also an organization called Prison Fellowship that trains people for prison ministry, but I don’t think it’s specifically Catholic. Good luck. )

I will pray for you!
I, too felt the calling to share the love of Christ with prisoners; showing them they are not being judged and the forgiveness of Christ when society shuns them, if that makes sense. My Secular Franciscan Fraternity presented two opportunities to write to pen pals in prison for those who were interested. I was asked if I minded writing to a man. I have been corresponding with him since August of last year. You should contact the Secular Franciscans, some actually go to visit. They would give you any instructions you need for corresponding! I wish you the best!
Peace and all good!

Praying that you find a way to help those in prisons in some manner.

Saint Michael, the archangel, defend us in battle, be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the devil, may God rebuke him, we humbly pray. And do you, O’ Prince of the Heavenly host, by the power of God thrust into Hell Satan and all the other evil spirits who prowl about the world for the ruin of souls.

Amen.

Our Father who art in Heaven, hallowed be thy name.

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on Earth as it is in Heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Amen.

Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.

Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb Jesus.

Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners, now and at the hour of our death.

Amen.

Praying to the Holy Spirit to give you guidance, direction, strength, fortitude & wisdom in your discernment.

You might be calling the wrong place! I volunteer in prison ministry and all though the diocese (where I live) is involved in prison ministry one would NOT call them (here were I live at least) rather it would be appropriate to contact the department of correctional facility you are interested in. Rather than developing a personal relationship with just one individual why not volunteer to be a Eucharistic Minister at the prison. They also may be in need of individuals to run a Catholic Service. At the prison I volunteer at there are 18 thousand individuals incarcerated and although they do have priests come to celebrate Mass they can’t possibly run enough in the limited time permitted by the correctional facility so they have a lot of lay people who run communion services with homilies.

I have a friend who recently began a letter writing prison ministry. I think they usually assign inmates according to gender (men writing men and women writing women).
My friend said the inmates have to request wanting to be part of the ministry.
My friend is not allowed to give his name or address. The letter from the inmate is addressed to his church I believe.

Praying for you to know your calling.
