My wife has stuggled with depression through-out her life, but in the last year it seems to have been getting worse. She was recently diagnosed Bi-Polar. Basically, for us, it means that some days she is quite normal; able to laugh, cry, whatever at appropriate situations.

However, every couple weeks she has a few days of Deep Darkness. In these times she wants to give up on God, has total self-loathing, does not want to be around me because she doesn’t think I want someone like her around me, wants to give up on life, feels completely alone and abandoned, wants to give up being a Christian (or a Theist for that matter) as well as other things that scare me!.

She has admitted that she has thought of suicide in these times (yes we have sought psychiatric help). The problem with the medicines is that they take more than a month to even begin to see a benifit - if the side effects aren’t too bad.

She’s on her third medication (we’re praying it works!) and has lost hope that anything will work.

Besides Prayers, I’m asking if there’s anything I can do. I’ve heard of St. John of the Cross’ Dark Night of the Soul but it sounds difficult to understand. I recently saw that St. Therese the Little Flower has something similar that might be easier.

Would getting either of these books be something that might be worth it? Or would I be “pushing” something on her so she’ll never read it?

She knows all I’m trying to do is help, but I get really scared when she starts wanting to give up on God, and says she has no more hope in God or His plan. I try to start reasoning with her about it, but it almost seems to make it worse. Sometimes I wonder if I should just let her rant and not try to reason with her for fear it might push her away.

On top of all this, she is a recent convert to Catholicism (Easter '12) and I also fear she is associating these dark times with her conversion… though she has never said this.

I know God can use this for His good, but I’m frustrated too. I see this all effecting our kids, and puts a huge strain on us as well.

Could this also be a spiritual attack? Is there a way I could help decern this? If I think it is partially so, what next?

Sorry, off my rant… please pray and any advice would be VERY helpful.

Thank you and God Bless :signofcross:

In my (totally non-expert) opinion, what your wife is experiencing has nothing to do with the experience which the mystics call the dark night of the soul. I certainly would **not **recommend the book with that name by St. John of the Cross, as he is for people who are advanced in the spiritual life.

It sounds like your wife needs prayers for healing, as well as medical help, both of which she seems to be getting. I will pray for your wife too.

Lord, I pray that in Your mercy you will send relief to PoorKnight’s wife so that she will no longer endure these horrible feelings. St. Dymphna, patroness of the mentally ill, please invoke God’s blessing upon this suffering woman.

Our Father,
Who art in heaven,
hallowed be Thy name;
Thy kingdom come;
Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses
as we forgive those who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil. Amen.

My husband is a recovering addict, who is bi-polar. It can be exhausting.

My husband was the closet thing to an agnostic I’ve ever known.

What I found is going to 12-step meetings helped me, not only w/ his drug use, but w/ me being a co-dependent. When I finally felt I was letting all this chaos almost break my spirit, thanks be to God, I found help.

I’m happy to say he’s got 2 yrs clean time. And has learned through 12-step programs to live life on life’s terms. Also, softening his heart to God helped him. He’s a Protestant.

This did NOT happen overnight. the you know what hit the fan in 2003, so it’s been quite the journey.

Also, Retrouvaille helped us immensely. And continues to do so.

I will be praying for you both.

I trust she/you is/are in therapy as well as taking medications? Therapists tend to frown on meds, psychs tend to discount therapy.

But the fact is meds combined with therapy have the best rate of success as a treatment. The meds can help with the physical chemical problems and shrinkage of the ‘positive thought processing center’ in the brain

but it takes therapy to unlearn the negative thought patterns and habits. She’s been thinking she’s worthless for a while, it will take a neutral observer to help her realize she’s wonderful and been lying to herself. To know and believe the truth about herself.

If you have not read Anne Sheffield’s books - “How You Can Survive When They’re Depressed” and “Depression Fallout” - I highly recommend them. She is the child of a depressive mother and suffered from undiagnosed depression herself. There are forums there where you can get support and ideas and recommendations for other books/resources.

God bless

My prayers for your wife and for you.

If she has suffered with this all her life and if drugs and therapy are not helping, then find a qualified doctor and explore the possibility of ECT. I know it’s barbaric, but I do believe that, in some cases, it works. It’s not a cure, but it is, for some patients, an effective treatment.

Thank you all for your prayers and advice.

Today is a better day. She’s not out of the tunnel yet, but she can see light (i.e. she has some hope again). I pray tomorrow is better yet and then praying she doesn’t have anymore of these episodes again… and for strength when she does.

What would people recomend for when she starts doubting God and doubting Christianity in these moods? Should I try to reason with her or just let her ‘vent’.

My biggest fear is she denies God in one of these episodes and then will be too proud to repent when she comes out of it… and I fear that if I don’t say something she’ll talk herself into it, but it also seems that when I do try to reason with her, it can make things worse…

God Bless :signofcross:
