My best friend who I consider to be very holy said all he needs to refer to was the Gospels for Jesus’s advice.

I replied later that when Jesus was in the desert with Satan and He was hungry Satan tempted Him to change the stones into bread. Jesus’s reply was: "man does not live on bread alone but on EVERY WORD that comes from the mouth of God.

There have been other occasions besides the Gospels when Jesus [God] has spoken. He spoke to Blessed Faustina of Poland and she kept a diary of everything He said. Maria Valtorta of Lucca in Italy wrote 4,000 pages on what she believed came to her from Jesus. St. Gertrude received a prayer for the souls in Purgatory from Jesus. There must be many other instances when Jesus or Mary have spoken the word of God. Of course as I have said before He spoke at Fatima on the 13th of July, 1917 to Lucia.

God the Father said: “This is my Son, the Beloved, listen to Him”.

We do not need to believe in private revelations as Catholics, although they can aid us in persevering in the faith, giving us hope in times of need, and calling us to a more perfect way of life. We are so lucky as Catholics to have the example of the saints to turn to when our faith life gets tough. I pray that they will intercede for us in all our needs, and that if your friend goes through a rough patch, they will intercede for him and pray on his behalf to God.
Jesus, I trust in You!

Lord, please see that this friend and all souls be open to truth and true revelation, and grant them the grace for faith, hope, love, joy, and courage, to embrace and walk in that truth. Send angels to help with this cause. Have mercy, Lord. Our Lady, angels, and saints, pray with us. Amen.

These words rks to which you refer are called private revelation. Public revelation ended with the death of the Apostle John.

As Catholics, we are required *only *to believe in that which was revealed by Christ through His Apostles along with the previous revelations by God the Father to the ancient Israelites: ie, what’s in the Bible.

Private revelations are judged in part by how well they adhere to Christ’s teaching (Church teaching). If they reveal something altogether new, then the revelation is deemed not to be from Mary or Christ.

Catholics are permitted to “believe in” Church-approved apparitions, but they are not required to. So both you and your friend are doing what is acceptable, even tho you are doing different things. Since nothing new is revealed through apparitions, your friend is ok.

Thank you everyone for you wise (name removed by moderator)ut but I am a person with a very open heart and if I hear a message from Jesus, Mary or whoever I tend to believe it [that is if it sits right with my heart]. All these additional messages are for our good, I believe, and are worth listening to as the “WORD OF GOD”. I mentioned that the Old Testament has words in it that come from God. But definitely NOT ALL. Many scriptural passages such as Psalm 15 wish “disaster on the wicked man”. This is NOT JESUS’S WAY. To follow such urgings would be against the loving messages of Jesus, such as love your enemy, do good to those who hate you, pray for those who persecute you. champo120

I think it’s great that you are like that, but there is no reason for it. There is nothing new in the private revelations, nothing we haven’t known.

More importantly, you ought not impose your own ideas, which stems from your own personality, onto others *if the Church does not do so. *The Church tells us we can pay attention to private revelations *or not. *

Sometimes I pay attention to them and that is good for me. Sometimes I can not get too caught up in them because I would have a bad reaction–start worrying too much, etc.

But bugging your friend for not doing some optional you do is not right. You do not have the authority to do that.

I don’t agree with you. They are good for us as a whole, but not necessarily each individual.

I was unable to find what you were talking about in Psalm 15, but in 140 there was something along thise lines, but you can see that David was asking God not to protect the wicked from the consequences of their acts. How will they learn to be good if they do not experience the results of their decisions? Moreover, David is leaving this up to God and not taking it upon himself.
This is NOT JESUS’S WAY. To follow such urgings would be against the loving messages of Jesus, such as love your enemy, do good to those who hate you, pray for those who persecute you. champo120
And yet most of the apparitions tell us that disaster will fall upon the wicked–that is the warning!
