Pray for the soul in Purgatory OR pray for the person in mortal sin?

Here’s something I have been thinking about lately. Suppose tonight, God comes to you and says that you will be departing from this life now. However you have time to pray for one person. Your choice is for a soul that is in Purgatory or a soul that is currently in the state of mortal sin.

Who would you chose to pray for and why?
 
What about both as an option. I pray for both. Someday I might end up there so I pray for all of those souls so they pray for me someday.

The soul in mortal sin also is always in need of prayer.

Both can be included in an intention.
 
I would submit totally to the will of God and pray that His will be done in the matter. But, it is entirely possible to say one prayer for 2 intentions. Gods Love is far beyond our human conception of love, “I desire not the death of a sinner”.
 
While the soul in purgatory cannot help himself he is already on the way to Heaven. I would pray for the soul in mortal sin.
 
I think God gives specific missions of prayer (maybe devotions would be a better word) to different people. Some are called more to one kind of prayer ministry than others.

However, if you pray for the souls in purgatory and they are received into Heaven–they can pray better than you or I for those in mortal sin.

This is an excellent point, one I hadn’t considered. Bravo!
 
Why not just say a Rosary or whatever you have time for and ask God to direct your prayers where they belong, since he knows better anyway?

I don’t understand how you could have time to pray for one person but not for another. Why not say “God, this Rosary (or whatever) is for [name] and [name]”? Prayers aren’t numbers to be added up and cashed in for a particular cause, are they? It’s not one rosary will get one person out of purgatory; two rosaries will get two people out of purgatory, etc., is it? Because if it is, why not just spit them out, ten minutes each: “…Amen. Okay, Grandma’s done. This one is for Joseph. I believe in God…”

Let me further expand then so I am clearer. Suppose God gives us a choice to pray for one and not the other. In other words, God is asking you to make a choice to pray for one intention in particular.

Admittedly, up until recently, I would have chosen the soul in immortal danger of damnation, but as JMJ Theresa has said, if we pray for the souls in Purgatory to help assist them to their entry into heavenly glory, they would be able to pray for the souls more perfectly than we ever could.

I am concluding that one of satan’s great snares is to convince people that Purgatory doesn’t exist so that souls are not assisted as our Lord asks of us so that these souls remain there. And if they remain there (albeit temporarily because they are indeed headed for heaven) it will give satan more ammo for ensnaring souls towards eternal damnation (because they aren’t able to obtain the perfect prayers of the souls that would have been in heaven had they had someone here on Earth pray for them).
 
I always pray for both. Both needs them, I think the one in mortal sin needs it more. It only takes a few seconds to pray for either.

Jesus, Mary and Joesph, pray for the souls in Purgatory and for those in serious sin.

:amen: Once that soul in Purgatory reaches Heaven, that soul will closer to God than any of us and pray directly to God for those in mortal sin!
 
I would pray for the person in mortal sin because the souls in purgatoty will eventually get out.

I would continue to pray for both because God has not given such a choice. Your question is purely hypothetical with it becoming reallity probably never. Why would God put us in such a situation.

Why does God put us in situations to make hard decisions in everyday life. Not everything in life is always cut and dry.

Having said that, I do pray for both the souls in Purgatory and those in mortal sin equally.

I find myself praying for so many people and I try not to leave anyone out. I sometimes find myself making a special effort to pray for the souls in Purgatory because of how few of our Christian brethern pray for them.

As someone earlier stated, it may be a particular calling by each person as to whom they feel a special connection in being called to pray for.

I just think it is unfortunate that those in Purgatory get neglected so often.
