Pray for Vocation - is it acceptable?

Not sure if this should be relocated to the Vocations board, but anyway…

Would it be too proud to pray for Vocation? Like Vocation (priesthood in particular) is a grace from God, so it seems too self-conceited to ask for more when we already have so much at hand.

Would it also be too proud to pray for MY OWN Vocation when God might not really have any special Vocation plan for me?

I don’t think so. Asking God to help you find your Vocation isn’t a matter of pride, it’s a matter of wanting to serve Him and do His will.

Marriage is a vocation just as much as religious life (or single life for that matter). God does have a plan for you. Discern it, and live it the best you can!

It is good to pray for such.

Every person has a vocation, whether it is marriage life, ordination, monastic or eremetic life or a single life.

As to praying, all people should pray to God to reveal to them what their vocation is. I have been discerning my vocation to the Priesthood for 6 years, and I am still asking God to reveal to me if this is my vocation! Discerning a vocation to the Priesthood is a hard thing, for there are many things you have to consider. For example, do you believe you can live without a family? Do you think you can become a Father to the People of God? Also, you have to have a Spiritual Director.

As to praying, all people should pray to God to reveal to them what their vocation is.

I think this is the salient point. We should prayer for God to guide us to our vocation, rather than pray that God give us a specific vocation of our choosing. I prayed for 3 or 4 years for God to let me know if I had a diaconal vocation. I never prayer to get that vocation, but for guidance if that was were he was leading me. Even after being in formation for a year I still pray that he guides me.

That’s not to say we can’t ask, but I would always approach it as “please provide me X, but if it be not your will then guide me to where I am called.”
