The bible tells us that the only way to the father is through him and that he is the mediator, so why seek forgiveness from Mary or a priest?

Your full of great questions today! If I ever meet a Catholic who expects forgiveness to come from Mary or a priest, I’ll let you know!👍

true that!

Basically- ask Mary to pray for us. We NEVER ask her forgiveness, she can’t give it.

As for Confession- the priest is acting in persona Christi. Thus, through the power of the Holy Spirit, sins are forgiven.

Gospel According to Saint John 20: 21-23
21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost. 23 *Whose sins *you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

*23 “Whose sins”… See here the commission, stamped by the broad seal of heaven, by virtue of which the pastors of Christ’s church absolve repenting sinners upon their confession. *

Read Physician of the Soul for more goodness!

Again I will tell you Mary is not a mediator nor is a priest, you do realize that the bible tell us that only the Lord can forgive sins? This is a confirmation of that. Did you know that by Yeshua dying on a cross if you accept it your sins are already forgiven. I myself have experienced what your doctrine says about confessing your sins to a priest, you go out drinking the night before, you have same premarital fun, etc. and all you have to do is say the our father, or rosary a couple times and your good.

And only the Lord is forgiving the sins.

And since when is it a free-for-all?

When you went to confession, sounds like you possessed neither contrition nor a firm purpose of amending your life. If that was the case, you were not granted the grace of the sacrament.

Mary and a Priest are just as much mediators as your relatives and friends who you ask to pray for you are.

Priests are descendants of the apostles who were given the power to forgive or retain sins. History and the Bible will show you this is how Christ intended it from the beginning.

Hogwash. To abuse the sacrament such as you describe is sacrilage. Not only does it invalidate reconciliation, but it adds another mortal sin on top of that. The sacraments are NOT to be abused by anyone for any reason.

And lying directly to the Lord is ok in your way of thinking.
Many a protestant will lie every Sunday to the Lord. We protestant pastors have a saying “act like the devil on Saturday night and act like a saint on Sunday. Just say a prayer and all is forgiven.”

You slept through catechism class did you? You did go to class did ya?😉

I’m right now doing the “5 first Saturdays”. You can do it too, FollowTheWay, it is a devotion that our Lord Jesus Christ personally told sister Lucia (the seer of Fatima) to do and tell others to do - as a reparation for the blasphemies committed against Holy Mary, for the conversion of Russia, and for the unity of the Church.

This is what you are supposed to do: on five consecutive First Saturdays of the month, go to confession, attend Holy Mass, partake in the Eucharist, pray 5 decades of the Rosary, and spend 15 minutes in the company of our Blessed Mother, meditating on the misteries of the Rosary. Then, offer the whole thing as a reparation for offenses and blasphemies that the world commits against Holy Mary. I hope you won’t find it un-Christian to do this, since it was our Lord who appeared in 1925-1926 to sister Lucia, and INSISTED that she spreads this devotion!! Our Lord is apparently outraged seeing how people offend his mother!!

In addition to the wonderful things our Lord told would be the fruits of this devotion, Holy Mary promised that at the hour of death of those people who did these “5 first Saturdays”, she will appear and assist them with all graces necessary for salvation.

It’s a win-win, you make reparation for the sins of others, and also save your own soul in the process!

More info at “Fatima Family Apostolate” website, see “5 first Saturdays”.

The Bible tells us that we do not only approach God but righteous persons also…

**"But you have come to Mount Zion and to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem, and to myriads of angels,

to the general assembly and church of the firstborn who are enrolled in heaven, and to God, the Judge of all, and to the spirits of the righteous made perfect,"

(Hebrews 12:22-23, underscoring is mine)**

-The word of God is too rich in literature to take literally upon

The bible tells us that the only way to the father is through him and that he is the mediator, so why seek forgiveness from Mary or a priest?
The bible also tells us to pray for eachother and that the prayer of a righteous man has much power.

Why shouldn’t we ask others to pray for us when the bible tells us to do just that?

I don’t know where you got the idea that Mary forgives sins, can you find that doctrine for me in the catechism, thanks.

Where the idea came from of confessing your sins to a priest and of the priest saying the words of absolution to you. It came from Christ Himself.

James 5 16 Confess therefore your sins one to another: and pray one for another, that you may be saved. For the continual prayer of a just man availeth much.

John
21 He said therefore to them again: Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, I also send you. 22 When he had said this, he breathed on them; and he said to them: Receive ye the Holy Ghost.
23 Whose sins you shall forgive, they are forgiven them; and whose sins you shall retain, they are retained.

Once again the CC leads the way in actually putting the Holy Scriptures into practice.

Ok, everyone, Ralph is gonna give ya’ll some good ol’ book lernin.

First, we must understand what it is to be a mediator. Before we go on, let us look at the dictionary definition from this site
  1. One that mediates, especially one that reconciles differences between disputants.
Alright.

Now, let us look at another definition, this one from a legal source.
(n) Mediator is the person who intervene in a dispute between two parties, to reach an amicable solution for the dispute, considering the stance and validity of claims of the parties, extend up to which each of the party is ready to compromise or accept. It is a voluntary activity with or without a request from the parties, the success depends on the acceptance of the decision by the parties
Now, if we look to the oldest use of the word, we get that a mediator is one who brokers an agreement between two parties that are at odds. This is from the 1913 Webster’s dictionary
Mediator \Me"di*a`tor, n. [L. mediator: cf. E. m['e]diateur.]
One who mediates; especially, one who interposes between
parties at variance for the purpose of reconciling them;
hence, an intercessor.
So, we get that a mediator is one who helps reconcile two parties. This is Jesus’s role as the one Mediator between God and Man. He brokered the treaty that we were not worthy to do. We should also note that both parties have a role: God forgives us if we ask and takes us back when we come to him.

Now, Catholics understand this fully. Protestants, as a rule, focus on the role of mediator as go-between. This is a very limited role of the Mediator, and is typically refered to as an intermediary. In other words, Jesus is no longer the broker of the treaty but the Spiritual delivery boy, running messages back and forth.

So that is the first thing.

Now, Mary IS NOT the Mediator between God and Man. ONly Jesus brokered the New Covenant. However, that does not mean that she cannot be an intermediary. Just as I can ask you to pray for me, we can ask her and any of the other saints, who the Bible tells us that though they are dead on earth they are alive in Christ, to do the same.

No Catholic prays to a priest. NOT ONE. If they do, they are guilty of a serious sin. Confession to a priest is Biblical and historical.

What confuses me about all of this is if you truly were a CAtholic, why do you not know this information?

Theologically, I would say that there is a more specific aspect of the mediation of Christ – where the word “ONE” attaches to the word “mediator.” This is via the hypostatic union. Jesus as true God and true man is, in Himself, the mediation of man to God. His mediation as intercessor is necessarily dependent upon his mediation via His divine Personhood.

Excellent point. I was looking only at the word itself, but the Nature of Christ is more powerful

And upon further reflection I would add that Crist’s unique mediation is also effected through His High Priesthood.

Catholics agree that only God forives sins. It’s right in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. “Only God forgives sins,” CCC 1441.

We also believe the Bible when it says that Jesus authorized priests to forgive sins on His behalf. “And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, ‘Receive the Holy Spirit. If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained,’” John 20:22-23.

Only God forgives sins. God forgives sins through priests. Priests cannot, and do not claim to, forgive sins by their own authority.
