“V. Pray for us O Holy Mother of God.
R. That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.”

Could someone tell me what the ‘V’ and the ‘R’ stand for? I’ve always wondered.
Also, I’m making up booklets for a Chaplet devotion to be recited at my parish and was wondering could I use the word ‘All’ instead of ‘R’ if everyone is to recite this part of the prayer?

Many thanks.

Versicle and Response. The priest reads out the versicle and the congregation responds.

I don’t know the answer to that question. Let’s wait for other answers here, or alternatively you could ask a priest.

Thank you for your help, I will ask my Priest for his advice!

I had to ask this question, also, when reading the Magnificat.

I have seen the V and R prayers written in modern form as “Priest” and “People”, or “Prayer Leader” and “People” if that helps.
