Dryness means there is not consolation in it, no good feeling from it. It is like we are just reciting meaningless words because we can’t keep our mind on our thoughts and yet so much effort is spent trying to touch Jesus. But there is nothing.
In this condition, we are tempted to quit praying for it seems hopeless and of no value. We feel that we could be spending our time doing something else and not wasting our time praying.
It is at these times that we need prayer even more, and that God is pleased even more because we are now expending more effort in our prayer to do his biding. Whereas if we feel good and are high on emotion while praying, prayer is easy since we like it.
So the saying holds, “seek the God of consolations, rather than the consolations of God.”
This also ties into thanking God for good things and bad things equally which is basically ignoring consolations and accepting all from God’s hand. But that is another story.
May God bless and keep you. May God’s face shine on you. May God be kind to you and give you peace.
